Show Boost, of Course, But Have zri? I A Reason for Your Boosting J I by ; J - -- - tV (Republished bv Request ) I Down In Lob Angeles I met a for-I for-I mer Ogdcnite who hud. gone to Cali-I Cali-I fornla for his health, finally gone Into business down there, and as oioflt of them do, became conrcrted. As I remembered him In Ogden, he I was never very enthusiastic over anything, Indeed h 'would have 9 ben classed -with the knoefcors if a j very sovero lst had been made. But down in California he had be-I be-I come Infected. H had become filled fill-ed with the California spirit of boost, California was the greatest country on earth. The greatest biisi-opportunltles. biisi-opportunltles. Tho country was simply sim-ply teeming with opportunity to pick golden dollars, he said, and advised me to come at once and grow rich. I afterwards learned that he was not doing remarkably well, indeed he wns not doing quite so well as ho did while living in Ogden. He was not looking any better physically, that I could see. but he had Improved In one very important particular: He Had Gotten rid of the Grouch and Had Learned to Boost. There may be a number of things which are not just right in Ogden. (There arc In every city. But the ono j thing that is most the trouble with Ogden. the thing that Interferes most with her growth 1b, that percentage of our population whom wo call I Knockers. And let me make this observation I about knockers. Invariably they are a class of people who have never seen tho outside of their native state. They complain about the conditions here because they cannot know, by comparison, what a God-blessed country we have. You'll invariably find a knocker to bo a man who has never done anything for the town and who is kicking because the town docs not do something for him. A knocker is n person with a contagious disease. If he associates with any number of people regularly (which is not likely to be the case) he will Infect them with the same pessimism which has caused Mb own failure and the failure which he predicts for his town. ' Beware of the knocker. If yon. yourself, are yet untainted with this loathsome disease, thank God for your light heart, and take care that you remain pure. So that Is the only thing the matter mat-ter with Ogden and that can be oercome. TVC aro all going to become be-come so enthusiastic, one of those days, over our good little town, that the knocker will get the virus of happiness and of hope and of Boost into his veins "and the truth will make him free." Ogden Is a good town, and sho Is going to grow better every day and every year beginning right now. Ogden Og-den has the big town virus in her veins and she is going to grow just as surely as the sun will arise again over those glorious mountaina to the east, and sho is going to continue to grow jUBt aB surely as the Bun wJIJ continue to shine upon tbo wator of that wonderful lake on the west. I know what you are thinking, Mr. Knocker, you are saying to yourself, "This is all talk this is groundless enthusiasm." But I deny the charge. My Optimism Is tho result of my own observations and reasoning. Incidentally Incident-ally I might say that I have seen tho United States from Florida to Canada and from Now York to California, Cali-fornia, and I would rathor live in Ogden Og-den than In any city I haYe ever seen. And why is Ogdcn's growth so sure? For somo very natural reasons. rea-sons. First, bocanse tho beet raisers of tho country tributary to Ogden will raise this year. Eighty-five Thousand Tons of Beets, and for this crop they will receive a little less than a half million dollars money which will come to Ogden. The percentage of increase In bank clearings In Ogden, according to tho last report, Were the Second Largest in the United States. Do you get that: regardless of the size of the towns, or their location, or their reputed prosperity Ogden's bank clearing beat them all but one. Do you know -that the pea crop. Just harvested, Is ono of the greatest In the country and that it put into circulation here; One Hundred and Sevcnty-fivcW'housaud Dollars? Do you know that the canning factories fac-tories have contracted to give the farmers of this lcinity Ten Dollars a ton for all the tomatoes tliey can produce, and that the canners have already" sold ecry can, for which they dare tako an order? Do you know that this country Is a great dairying center that the quality qual-ity of the dairy stock Is getting better bet-ter every year producing more and more butter and that there is a hungry hun-gry market ready with a good price for every pound that we will sell them? Do you know that there is not a better poultry country In tho world and that eery jear the demand for Utah poultry and eggs Is bringing money here that usually Roes to other oth-er fields? Do you know that there are thousands thou-sands of acres of dry farms around us, which five years ago were barren wastes and that these farms are now producing a quality of wheat for which there is an eager demand? Do you know that the world has Just had a very little taste of Utah fruit and that tho excellence of its flavor is going to create a demand which we cannot begin to fill even i with our rapidly growing supply? Do you1 know that you can't get anywhere, without coming to Ogden? Do you know that between now and nineteen fifteen the great intornation, al automobile highway will bring i thousands of moneyed strangers to i. ' our town? The railroad travel will be tremendous. Havo you been down to tho depot lately and seen the hundreds of trains which dally come to Ogdon? Do you know that one day Ogden will hare the greatest Inland resort In the world, out on tho white beach at Promontory Point? Don't you know that It will not be long before I the Ogden canyon will attract a thousand thou-sand tourists whoro it now attracts one? j Don't you know that right now houses' for rent are ncarce In Ogden? Have- you been to the outskirts of I the city in any direction and no- ! ticcd tho hundreds of pretty little cottages? Have you stopped to realize that those homes are all being built, not bv promotion companies, but by individuals in-dividuals who will live In them and J are permanent residents of Ogden? Do you know that there Is not a ' i better school system In tho world j than the, Ogden schools no better l buildings, no better teaching mate- i rials? ' I Do you know thai a man of any denomination can come to Ogden and attend services n a church of his own denomination, and no matter what the denomination, he need not be ashamed of the building in which he worships? I Do you know that the great railroads rail-roads centering In Ogden are doing I j business to their greatest capacity and that this means more and more em- jl ployment -every year for Ogden men' You any that Ogdcn's growth is I slow, and I answer: "Wc are glad It I is, because we know it to be sure. Mr Knocker, don't you know that It Is a E distinct advantage to Ogden tbat her f building Is upon the sure rock of 1 genuine prosperity, instead of the ' sandy foundation of inflated values? I W0 know whereof we speak: we have I had a taste of that spectacular I growth known as Boom and tho blow nearly killed us, but In the af- fl terward hazy moments of delirious ' indecision we decided to lie rather fi than die and now we are gaining j strength upon the pure air and the I I natural resources of our wonderful country, and we are going to continue I this substantial growth, thank you. I We have learned the lesson of stim- I 5 ulatcd values and Never again! 1 So Ogden is alright. Mr. Knocker I you have just got the wrong men-! I tal attitude, that's all. After you have thought these things over a little 1 1 while yon are going to come over and j make application to Join the tribe I known as Boosters, and anytime you I 3 come we are going to give you the I glad hand of welcome for wo need 1 1 you, we need the good will of every ' I man. woman and child In Ogden. I There Is no strength in discord sit 1 in and let's smoke the pipe of peace. I Wo will teach you our war cry of 1 "Greater Ogden, Gateway to the 1 "West," and the first thing you -know 1 you'll be shonting It with gladness 9 and conviction and some of the pros- I perity thai Is finding Its way to Og- I den, win find its way to you.
