Show TWO BOYS ARE SHOT BY AN OFFICER Word reached here today of the shooting at Helper, Utah, last night of two boj's by E. B. Johnson, a former deputy sheriff, who mistook them for hoIdupB. Brigham Taylor, IS years old, b dead, and Arnold Deardall, 19, Is seriously wounded. Johnston, who was acclaimed by the citizens of PrJco for killing "Gunplay" "Gun-play" Maxwell, a desperado, some yoars ago, Is held without ball. H says tho boyB acted suspiciously when ho met them on a country road". Dcar-dall Dcar-dall Insists that Johnston fired without with-out excuse. Reports of the killing conflict-Johnston conflict-Johnston declares that the boys withdrew with-drew suspiciously from the road into the willows as he drove by in his buggy nnd that ho opened fire when they failed to answer his challenge as to what they wanted. The two boys were en route fron the coal pilpes lu Spring Canyon, whoro they were employed, to tho Y. M. C. A. at Helper Just aa thoy started across tho Price bridge, a mile from town, they encountered Johnston in a buggy, accompanied by D. W Faussett of Helper. They stopped to one side to get out of the way of the horsea. Johnston drove by, stopped and leaped from tho buggy. "What do you follows want?" he called back. "NotnThg," young Deardall Bays he replied. Then camo the shots, four in all. Taylor droppod to the floor of the Ibridgo. shot through tho abdomon. Deardall fell on top of him wjth a bullet through the left thigh. Both would have fallen into the stream had not Johnston run forward and dragged them to the roadway. Learning his ghastly mistake, Johnr aton, aided by Fausett, lifted the wounded boys Into tho buggy and drove back to Helper. Medical attention at-tention was Bummoncd at onco, hut was of o avail to young Taylor. He died In great agony at 10 o'clock la.st night Deardall will rocover. Johnston is said to have shot to death seven men In IiIb time In tho lino of duty. For many years he wao deputy sheriff of Carbon countj, resigning re-signing only recently to accept a position po-sition as special agent for the Southern South-ern Utah railroad. He is known as tho best shot with a revolver In Carbon Car-bon county. |
