Show yu CLIFF DWELLINGS ARE DISCOVERED Prof. Byron Cummlngs of the faculty fac-ulty of the University of Utah, yesterday yes-terday returned from an extended exploration ex-ploration trip in the canyons of northern north-ern Arizona, bringing with him data of Interesting .discoveries made In his researches Speaking concerning his trip and his, work, Prof. Cummlngj said: "Our examinations were chiefly in Segie canyon, which is to tho south of the San Juan canyon. Hero we found a cliff house that heretofore had not been discovered. It was filled with earth and debris which had been deposited there in the centuries, and therefore this particular specimen of tho cliff dwellings was in a virgin Ftate, so to speak Tho fact that it wa3 so billed with dirt and stones showed that It had" not been disturbed and that It was practically -as it had been left by the Indians '"There were seventy-five rooms in the house, and wc cleared out as many of them as we possibly could. In some of them tho roof rock had I fallen in boulders so largo that wc could not movo them. However, there wbb sufficient Interesting mat-tor mat-tor found In the rooms that we did clear to fully repay ua for our trouble. We have numerous specimens of pottery pot-tery and wooden Instruments to add to our collection, and we found many of tho shell coins that were in use by the cliff dwellers whon they Inhabited that region. "in one of the rooms we found a great pottery jar full of the shell coins. There waB more than a bushel of these money pieces, so that one may havo a fair conception of tho size of the Jar. "This summer's work has boon supplementary sup-plementary to that already begun by ub In that region, the trip just ended having occupied seven weeks of our time. While the work was hard during dur-ing a great deal of that time, the Interesting thlngB that we saw caused us to forget the Inconvenience and the fatLgue experienced. We began our explorations In those canyons four years ago, and we expect yet to make other interesting discoveries in our future work The cliff houso which wo discovered on this trip gives evidence evi-dence of tle fact that we aro likely to unearth still further objects of interest in-terest to tho archeologlst." |
