Show WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT JOHNSON Hugh Jennings There are a number num-ber of great pitchers in tho American leaguo. Ed Walsh Is great and there aro others, although I bollcvc Walter Johnson Is a little the best. In tho National league, of course, I cannot speak with as much knowledge, but I doubt if thny could put a man Into tho field who could take Johnson's measure. Clark, Griffith Walter Johnson is the greatest pitcher T have ever seen. You may say that 1 think so because I am managing Washington Just now. but that Isn't the reason by a good deal. I said Johnson was tho greatest great-est pltchor in tho game last year when I was with Cincinnati and before be-fore I had any Idea whatsoever of over Joining the Washington or any other club in the American leaguo. I Robert Beschcr Marty O'Toolo is my particular hoodoo. Ho strikes mo out easier than nny pitcher I ever faced. I won't say he 16 the greatest pitcher in tho National league; at least Bot yet, for he is still young, but he is undoubtedly the hardest one for me to face. As for the American Amer-ican league, of course, I don't know 60 much about its players, but what I have heard from a good many sources lends me to believe that Walter Johnson' is about the best In the business. busi-ness. Jake Daubert The hardest pitcher In tho world for me to face is Rubo Marquard; at least that has been my experience this year. I think that tho pace Marquard is traveling now Is about the best In the league. As for tho American league, I havo nover faced Walter Johnson, though I have heard a groat deal about him, and tho majority of opinions I hear ex-prvod ex-prvod seem to agree that he is about the best in the business Hal Chase I consider Walter Johnson the greatest pitcher in the American league. I think ho Is all to that organization that Mathewson used to be to the National Yes. Johnson Is the true Mathewson of the American league, and since Mattj has begun to decline. I will go a step farther and say that Johnson is tho greatest pitcher in either league, for It Is conceded that Matty Isn't what he used to be. John Evors I havo never seen Walter Johnson, but from talks -with American league players he must bo a wonder, and if I "had seen him T would no doubt pick him As for tho ones I have seen in our league there are five that it is liard to chooso from on their present form nnd thev nre Marquard, Rucker. O'Toole, La-onder La-onder and Suggs But if you are asking ask-ing me my opinion of the grentest pitcher or pitchers I know pf, I would say Mathewson first and Brown second, and could any one honestly pass up those two brilliant performers after such wonderful careers ca-reers as they havo had? Mathowson, In my opinion. Is the greatest pltchor tho game ever knew, and Brown Is his equal or Just close behind. .Too Jackson Walter Johnson is the Kreatoat pitcher In the whole world. Last year I used to swear b' Ed WalBh, sometimes at him, but this year it is all Johnson. He has tho II greatest speed of any man I evor saw II and Is by all odds tho hardest pitcher II In the world for me to face. Ho has II everything a pitcher could want and I when he Is going full Bpeed and starts M burning them over the plat a bat- ter might as woll striko out and be fl done with It, Tho ono best bet In (fl the American league is Walter John- son nnd I don't bellovo ho has any I equal in the National I Ty Cobb Ed Walsh always used to I be my particular trouble whenever T I wanted to fatten my batting averago I Walter Johnson Is another terror in I the box but Ed Walsh, I believe. I when ho Is going right, has my goat I a trifle moro than any twirlcr I know I of. George Morlarty I believe Walter Johnson Is the greatest pitcher In the I American league. He has always I been a wonderful box man, and this I year he seems to be going stronger I than cer. Ho Is a terrible man to I face when he Is using his full speed. fl There 1b certainly no pltchor in the .!! game who Is his oqual In that rospect. 'm Joe Wood is very fast, but he Is rath- 'fl cr light, and although his ball comes fl speedily, it has not the force behind fl It that Johnson putB Into his spoed. fl When Johnson shoots tho ball across fl the plate It fairly whistles through fl the air and strikes heavily with the fl strength he puts behind It I think jfl he is the greatest pitcher in the fl game.
