Show CHANGES IN PENSION LAWS. l'i:o FDL'HK XF.CF.SSAKY FOR A WIDOW TO SKI IKE 1SKXF.F1TS OK 1UX KXT ACT IXt KK iSlXG PENSIONS OF WIDOWS OF DEFEASED DE-FEASED SOI.D1EKS AM) SAIL-' SAIL-' OILS OF THE CIVIL WAK, WITH j .MEXICO AXD SO FORTH, .',- PROVED SEP1 EMi;i:it 8, l!)tU: j The News editor is in receipt of the following circular from Senator Smoot, which he thinks might he of interest to News readers: If a person is pensioned as the j widow of a soldier, sailor, or marine j who served in the Civil War, and ! who was his lawful wife during the j period of his service in said war, or as the widow of a soldier, sailor, or marine, who served in the Civil War, the War with Mexico, or the War of 1S12, and who has readied the age of seventy years, she should, if she has not already done so, write a let-j let-j tor to the Commissioner of Pensions, j Washington, D. C, being careful to uite in same, correctly, her pension certificate number, the name and service of the soldiers, sailor, or marine, ma-rine, the exact date of her birth, the place of her birth, her name as it appears in her pension certificate, and her present postoffice address in full. No further formal application is necessary nec-essary to secure the benefits of the increase of pension granted by the first section of the Act. If she has reached the age of seventy years on or before the date of the passage of the Act. the incrense will he allowed from that date. If, however, she becomes seventy years of age at sometime subsequent to the passage of the act, the increase will be allowed al-lowed her to commence from the date she reaches that age. If the evidence in her pension case shows that she is entitled to the increase in-crease of pension provided by this legislation, the Bureau of Pensions will, as soon as possible, grant an increase. in-crease. If further evidence be necessary, neces-sary, a call will be issued. No claim agent or attorney will be recognized in connection with this matter. In order to obtain pension or renewal re-newal of pension under the second section of the above act, which grants a pension to a widow whose name was on .the pension roll and has been dropped 'by reason of her marriage to another person who has since died, or from whom she has been divorced upon her own application and without on her part, a remarried widow must file a formal application In the Bureau of Pensions. Senator Reed Smoot will be glad to furnish proper blank upon application. If a widow desires to claim pension pen-sion under the third section of the Act-, which gives a widow, as described de-scribed in Section 2 of the Act approved ap-proved April 19, 1908, title to apply for a pension if she married a soldier or sailor prior to June 27, 1905 (an extension from June 27, 1890) it will be necessary for her to file formal application in the Bureau of Pensions. Pen-sions. Senator Smoot will be glad to furnish proper blank upon request and any further information desired. |
