Show REPUBLICANS HEAR SPEAKERS, RALLY A SUCCESS. Threatening Weather Reduces Attendance. But Fails to Diminish Hearers' Interest and Enthusiasm. Enthus-iasm. It was only because of the threatening threat-ening condition of the weather that a largeer crowd did not turn out last night, to hear Hon. John Y. Smith of Salt Lake and Hon. C. N. Whitman of Provo, discuss the political issues now claiming the attention of the American public. As it was, the attendance, though small, was appreciative and enthusiastic, enthus-iastic, which, after all, constitutes a good meeting. Mr. Smith, who has a fine voice, favored the audience with several vocal solos, being accompanied on the piano by Mrs. C. T. Woodbury. The first speaker of the evening was Bishop W. J. Burns, Milford's next representative in the State legislature, leg-islature, who spoke along lines of party unity in the big state and national fight that is on. Mr. Burn's short talk was closely followed and well received. Hon. C. N. Whitman discussed interestingly in-terestingly and intelligently, the great questions which are agitating the people. His address showed thorough familiarity with current events and conditions, politically, and gave evidence of coming from a thinker and a student of public affairs. af-fairs. While bold in utterance, Mr. Whitman Whit-man is also logical and convincing and his talk of last evening left a good impression upon his hearers. It is to be regretted that space forbids publication of an extended and detailed account of the address. Hon. John Y. Smith also gave the audience a splendid talk along lines just now paramount in political circles, cir-cles, among other things, touching caustically on the Administration's Mexican policy, as well as upon other phases of Administrative weakness and inefficiency. At the close of his address, Mr. Smith rendered another solo, which was much enjoyed. Both speakers left for Salt Lake this morning. Seen by a News man, late last evening, after the rally, they expressed ex-pressed unbounded confidence in the success of the Republican ticket, both state and national. Particularly Particular-ly did they commend the excellent personal and executive qualities of Hon. Nephi L. Morris, whom they know personally. |
