Show Juvenile granted hearing in hitchhiking death A hearing will be held in Cedar City on Friday, Dec. 19 to determine whether a New York State juvenile should be tried as an adult in the death of a hitchhiker. hit-chhiker. The juvenile confessed to a crime in New York and was subsequently brought to Utah to stand trial for the death of Duane Edward Schroer 37, whose decomposed body was found by the Iron County Sheriff's Office near the Hamilton Fort, Kanarra turnoff following direction given by the youth. Court officials said the hearing will be before First District Juvenile Judge Charles E. Bradford. Unidentified, by order of juvenile court, the 15-year-old youth entered the Utah State Hospital at Provo Nov. 14 for a 3()-day psychological evaluation requested by his attorney Willard Bishop of Cedar City. " The youth told state police the man was killed September 14. He also confessed of the slaying of a motel operator in Nevada and implicated an ac- complice who is currently being held in California on other charges. The court will determine if there is sufficient evidence to consider assigning the youth to District Court, where he would be tried as an adult. Under Utah law any youth 14 years and older who has been charged with a serious crime can bo tried as an adult following a hearing in juvenile court to determine the strength of the case |
