Earl Anthony An-thony Butts, top was the first place winner in Regional Science Fair. Center Cen-ter is Terrell Sandburg who picked up second place honors in biological Science Sc-ience division and bottom is Chris Lunt who won first place in biological Science, Junior High Division. Cedar City students score high in Region Science Fair Earl Anthony Butts and Ter-rell Ter-rell W. Sandberg, both students stu-dents at Cedar City High School, were awarded first and second places, respectively, respective-ly, for biological science exhibits ex-hibits in the senior high school division of th,3 1973 Southern Utah Regional Sci-ence Sci-ence Fair conducted at Southern South-ern Utah State College March 24., Mr. Butts was awarded tap honors for his exhibit on "The Efifects of Infrasound Upon Plants." Mr. Sandberg was runner-up with his display on "Longer Life Span -. Chemical Retardants to Aging." Chris Lunt, Cedar Junior High School student won first place in the biological sciences, scien-ces, junior division, for his exhibit on "Anti-Bacterial Ef-feet Ef-feet of A!eo Vera Cactus." Second place in that division went to Michelle Fisher of Milford for a display on "The Irradiation of Seeds." Third place winners in the senior biological sciences division di-vision were Mary Hatfield and Edna Eager of Hurricane High School. Their exhibit dealt with "Magnetotropism: Fact or Fallacy." Milford Junior High School student, Randy Hiatt, won third place in the junior biological bio-logical sciences division for a display on "Pharmaceutical Manufacturing From Natural Sources." Colleen Hacker and Mary Edwards of Hurricane Junior High School won first place in the junior phsical sciences scien-ces division for a display on "Why Rockets Fly." Second place in this division went to Cindy Jiminez and Kim Gray of Milford Junior (High School for an entry entitled "Crystals." "Cryst-als." Third place winner was David Coles, Cedar Junior High School, for an exhibit on i "Home Made iBattesies." Honorable mention for sen- lor high school biological sci- ences exhibits went to Russell X Ross for a display on "Sage Grouse on Parker Mountain," a and to Kevin Miller, for his entry on "Circadian Rhythm." fj Both students are from Rich- field High School. $ In the Junior High blologl- cal sciences category, honor- able mention was awarded to Cedar City Junior High School students Dianne Rollo and S Terri MoCall for 'The Effect of Radiation on Germinating and Dormant Radish Seeds." j Sua Ann Bonzo, Clarice Cor- a bridge, Sherilyn Heap, and Jaeque Jensen for 'The Feel- S ings of Plants;" Virginia jf Hayne, Shawny Christensen, , and Debra Thompson for . "Testing the Effect of Deodorant Deodor-ant Soap on Germs with a Hand Washing Test," and Karen Morris and Bonnie Baldwin for "The Effects of Mineral Deficiencies on Plant Growth." Karen Whitaker and Jennel-Je Jennel-Je Leko of Milford Junior High School won an honorable mention for "Self-Contained Vivarioms." Honorable mention in the junior high physical sciences division went to Troy Donnel Cude of Milford Junior High School for a display on "Copper "Cop-per Extraction" and to Annette Annet-te Von Tasseli and Kim Brox, also of Milford, for their "Moon Base City" display. Cedar City Junior High School students winning honorable hon-orable mention were Daren Felix and Leon Nelson for a demonstration on "Jet Propulsion," Pro-pulsion," and Clark Moss, Roger Seegmiller, Brad Jensen, Jen-sen, and Steven Day for a display dis-play on "Rutherford's Atomic Gun." Judges for the senior high school exhibits were Dr. Mer-rell Mer-rell R. Jones, associate professor profes-sor of physics at SUSC, Joe Jarvis of the Bureau of Land Management, and Glenn Brad-ley, Brad-ley, representing the U. S. Forest Service. Judges In the junior division were Hal Isaacson of the Bureau Bur-eau of Land Management, Bab Childs from the Forest Service, and Floyd Coles of the Wild Life Resources Department De-partment Dr. Joseph Camp, associate professor of chemistry at SUSC and chairman of the regional science fair, said that Earl Butts and Terrel Sandberg will represent the southern Utah area at the State Science Scien-ce Fair In Salt Lake City and the National Science Fair in San Diego, Calif. Mr. Butts will receive a full tuition scholarship to SUSC. Mr. Sandberg was named as alternate. al-ternate. Dr. Wendell Brooksby presented pre-sented a trophy to Elwln Prince, Craig Gibson, Roy Miller, Mil-ler, and Perry Bouy on behalf of the Utah Veteranarian Medical Association for their exhibit of a Legamentary Skeleton. The group represented repre-sented Cedar City Junior High School. |
