Show Cedar BLM sponsors YACC Program The Cedar City District of the Bureau of Land Management has sponsored a Young Adult Conservation Corps Camp. The YACC program, which is administered ad-ministered by the U.S. Departments of Interior and Agriculture and State Governments, was established by the President and the Congress to provide employment for young men anand women 16 through 23 years of age. Unlike the Youth Conservation Con-servation Corps, which is a summer program and accepts ac-cepts youth 15 through 18 years of age, the YACC program operates year round. It is also unique in that it accepts young adults who are not enrolled in school and are not attending college. This greatly expanded work program attempts to reach young adults from all social, economic, ethnic, and racial classifications and give them an opportunity to learn some basic work skills and responsibilities. Many are not employable because they lack job experience. Enrollees are paid the minimum wage with 7 percent being eligible to receive incentive pay as assistant crew leaders. The program not only provides employment, but is a good boost to tiie local economy The Cedar City Camp is one of four in the state sponsored by the BLM. It has two work crews with approximately 40 enrollees working out of Cedar City, and crews of 10 enrollees each working out of Kanab and St. George. Work projects being done by the Cedar City Camp consist of livestock and wildlife water developments, develop-ments, range fence construction con-struction and repair, recreation site construction and maintenance, cedar post cutting, water storage tank construction and pipeline construction. Some enrollees are in support jobs in the BLM offices doing typing, clerical, and drafting work. Enrollees may also be loaned out to local governmental govern-mental agencies to perform work. The Cedar City Camp staff is composed of Larry Griffith, Camp Director, who has worked in the education field as a teacher and principal; Mike Dalley, Administrative Officer, who is a graduate of Southern Utah State College and has several years experience with the Bureau of Reclamation as an accountant ac-countant and adminstrative officer; Richard Hunter, a Cedar City native, is Work Director with 25 years experience ex-perience with U.S. Steel as a supervisor. The four crew leaders ', .who work directly with the enrollees are Talbot Nelson, Cedar City; Kim' Kramer, Cedar City; Rick Zaninovich, St. George and Bruce Evans, Kanab. Applications for employment em-ployment with the YACC are handled through local Job Srrvice Offices. |
