Show County anticipates lowering of mill levy The mill levy for Iron County purposes is likely to take a substantial drop, according to a review made by the Iron County Commission at their meeting held Wednesday of last week. At the regular meeting of the Commission the property tax was reviewed and a date for setting the mill levy set. A special meeting has been called for Tuesday, Aug. 7 and 8 a.m. at the County Court House, at which time the mill levy for 1978 will be established. Big reduction During the past year the mill levy for all county purposes was 10.90 mills. The commission, in reviewing the proposed mill levy for the current year, indicated that the levy may be reduced as much as 50 percent. During the review it was suggested that the levy for the general fund be reduced from 9.15 to 3.90. However, that reduction might have to be re evaluated by the commission Tuesday, according to Clair Hulet. He suggests that it might be necessary to set the general fund levy, more realistically, at 4.10 mills. Other recommendations to be considered by the Commission would be a reduction of the bond redemption levy at 1.20, down from 1.35 and the library levy at .35, down from .40. Ordinanance passed At the meeting the Commission adopted an Ordinance titled "County Right of Way Ordinance," as prepared and presented by Hans Q. Chamberlain, County Attorney. The new ordinance sets forth a policy of protection for the county for abuses against existing county right-of-ways. A delegation from Monte Vista Subdivision in Cedar Valley met with the county requesting assistance in resolving problems related to roads and drainage. The commission reported to the delegation that they were awaiting a response from Union Pacific Railroad concerning a request, by the county, to use a portion of their right-of-way, as a drainage source. "Solutions to the problem are not easy to come by and efforts, that are justifiable, were being extended," the delegation was told. Paragonah requests. Three specific requests were presented to the Commission by a delegation from Paragonah. The concerns of the delegation included, a progress of a previous request to resurface the road from Parowan to Paragonah; a request for financial assistance for construction of a fire station and finally a request for assistance for improvement of a road used principally for farming and livestock operations in the area. Categorically the Commission Continued on Page 3 is Commission Continued from Front Page responded by reporting: -That a request is now being prepared for presentation to the Utah Department of Transportation to assume maintenance of the road between the two cities. After an appeal ap-peal to the governor a request has been made, for such action to be taken. A copy of the letter was presented to the delegation. --The commission expressed a willingness to cooperate "to a degree to be determined, of the equitable and financial possibility on the proposed fire station." No assurance, however, was given of a specific dollar amount to which the county could be bound. -Asked that the delegation acquire the necessary right-of-ways on the proposed road improvements the commission indicated that once the right-of-ways are determined the county would consider scheduling improvements as requested by the delegation. Two matters concerning roads in Iron County were taken under advisement ad-visement by the commission. Discussed, but tabled for later discussion, was a request from UDOT for stripping needs on county roads at a fee of $120 per mile and a problem of resurfacing main street in New Castle. Consideration will be given to investigation of cost and the most economical approach to accomplish the items. |
