Show j Some Good.... Some Bad j There are Many Ways to Gain Attention ! i By Mary Gae Kvans j I like to read all trhe latest on psychology, and I've been j reading an article in a magazine on how we all need j attention. From the cradle to i the grave we all try to find j ways to get other people to j pay attention to us in order I to be well-adjusted and happy. Well, they suggested a few ways, such as working on worthy public service projects, dressing nicely, smiling, etc. But, I've been thinking of some other attention at-tention getters that never fail; for example, have you ever met a friend on the street and had him or her stare at your face totally fascinated by all you had to say and then go home and look in the mirror and see that the reason for the special attention was a piece of chocolate bar on your front tooth? I visited gaily through three stores one dav want attention. ..when they drop their bottles in church and they roll clear down the aisle during the prayer, or when they tip over the cart in the supermarket. They help get a lot of attention from sales clerks when they hide under the clothes racks with a sticky all-day sucker. A sure fire attention getter is i a car that stalls in the middle of a busy intersection or a car horn that gets stuck in a funeral procession. I never dare go to sleep in church because I've seen how much attention the sleepers get when they drop their heads and let out a little snort that wakes them up. And, have you ever knocked over one of those pyramids of cans, or nice stacks of watermelons in the grocery store? or accidently broken a bottle of Karo syrup or something really stinky like ammonia or vineear? before discovering I had a glob of whipped cream on the top rim of my dark glasses where I had laid them on the table during dinner. Thinking back, I remember a lot of people paying attention to me. Another good attention getter is a piece of toilet paper dragging from your shoe as you stroll downtown, or a shiny glob of jelly resting on the front of your white blouse (after you tried to grab a quick sandwich while hurrying to a PTA meeting). Children help a lot if you Getting to the checkout stand and discovering that you are out of check blanks (especially after everything is rung up). Every eye in the store will be on you. Oh, there are lots of ways-a torn hem, one false eyelash half off, walking into the wrong meeting (one full of very solemn men staring at the door), bending over a little too far and hearing a ripping sound, tripping or falling down in a public place. There are so many ways to get attention, sometimes I wish I didn't get quite as much. |
