Show Maintenance projects get board okay Howard Peterson of Cedar City has been named Transportation Director for the Iron County School Board. The appointment of the long-time Cedar City resident was approved by the Board of Education at it's regular meeting Monday. . Peterson has been with Bradshaw Chevrolet in Cedar City for 31 years and has been serving as assitant Shop Foreman. In other personnel matters the board also authorized the hiring of Dean Ray to serve as a Science and assistant football coach at Parowan High School. Maintenance projects Several maintenance projects were also approved with an anticipated expenditure of $44,000. The largest project was the roof repairing at Cedar High School. Other maintenance main-tenance projects included were: Blacktopping of the bus loading zone at North Elementary, blacktopping the play area at South Elementary and and blacktopping of the parking area at the District offices. In addition ad-dition authorization was given for blacktop repairs at Escalante Valley school, the purchase of a new water heater for the North Elementary and the repairing of the air conditioning system at Cedar High School. Prepare for opening Bids were opened for the supplying of milk, fuel oil and coal for the coming school year. Accepted was the bid on milk from Carter, Taylor and Baker for Vt pints of low fat milk at 10.13 cents per carton. The bid of CAPCO for supplying of fuel oil for the East Elementary was accepted at 31 cents per gallon with a request that the oil be determined to meet No. 4 furnace oil standards. Coal was bid on a three year contract. con-tract. Evans Coal of Parowan was awarded the contract conditional upon the coal meeting the minimuym requirements on sulfhur content and proper screening. An alternate bid from Dean Wilson of Salina was approved should the first bid fail to meet the specifications. The coal to be furnished by the two suppliers was from different mines. Other items The board also opened bids on two buses to be delivered out of the 1980 fiscal budget. The apparent low bid was submitted by Bryson Sales for Blue Bird Buses. Both will be 84 passenger, with a 51 cubic foot storage in the rear and two double luggage compartments. They will be powered by diesel engines with automatic transmissions. The low bid was $45,137 for each bus. Wayne Mifflin, community education director, presented a report to the board identifying the community com-munity utilozation of buildings and grounds of the district. He indicated that all of the outdoor grass areas of the district are being utilized extensively by various athletic teams in the community. His report indicated that for the 1977-78 year that 19,509 people through high school age participated in some 21 programs and that a total of 844 adults participated in a variety of programs offered through the combined programs of the School District and City Recreation Department. For computation purposes if a person participated in more than one activity they would be counted once for each activity in which they were registered. Building Use Cedar High School had by far the greater utilization with 19,947 people participating in the variety of programs. The Community Education Center was next in line with 8,409. It is housed in the old elementary building that was previously used by the Junior High School. Mifflin pointed out that the growth of the programs has shown a steady I increase over the past four years. In I 1974-75 total involvement was 15,283. I During the past year the total utilization for other than school activities ac-tivities amounted to 66,011. Also reporting to the board was Bruce Decker, District Director of Maintenance. He reported that efforts are being made to increase the aesthetic beauty of the various campuses. Problems of watering were identified owing to the lack of water pressure at Cedar High School and the heavy schedule of use at the various other campuses by various athletic groups. Efforts are being made, he said, to improve the attractiveness of the campuses through various means. Plans Approved Meeting with the board was architect ar-chitect John Rowley. He presented plans for the development of an expanded ex-panded vocational area at Parowan High School. Authorization was given to proceed with the plans and to issue a call for bids at the earliest possible date. Secondly the board approved the preliminary plans for the addition of two classroom units at the Parowan Elementary. Rowley was authorized to proceed with the development of detailed plans that would provide for air quality standards at the new Enoch Elementary now under construction. con-struction. Details of the plans will be presented to the Clean Air Division of Social Services for final approval and final cost estimates for installation. |
