Show Statement issued on dissident U. S, Senator Jake Garn (R-Utah) has condemmed the 14-year sentence given dissident Anatoly Sh-charensky Sh-charensky by the Soviet Union, alleging that the action rendered the Soviet signing of the Helsinki Accord "worthless." "With the blatant disregard the Soviets have shown today for human rights, we have seen yet another example of their unwillingness to keep their word, even when they have put it in writing in the Helsinki Accord," the Utah Republican said. He emphasized that the U.S. must now drive for an even harder bargain in strategic arms limitations talks. "Since we have seen that the Soviets consider their signing of the Helsinki Accord meaningless, perhaps it will do us no good at all to sign a SALT agreement with them," Garn said.
