Kditor: 1 recently wrote the editor of the Iron County Record to report that it had taken the local fire department over 20 minutes to respond to an alarm box accidentally triggered by my son at the Shakespearean Theater. Chief Bentley replied that the fire department response that finally did come was not due to the pulling of the alarm lever at all, but rather to a phone call from a passerby. Mr. Bentley gave the reason, I can be thankful that the whole fire department was not inconvenieced: some fire alarm boxes are hooked to the fire station while others are not. The one my son pulled apparently falls in the latter category. My purpose in writing was not to berate the local fire department but to point out a potentially dangerous situation, namely slow (or non-existant) response to a fire alarm. After reading Mr. Bentley's reply, I investigated the alarm systems of some nearby communities, including Los Alamos and Albuquerque. The same situation is found there also, in which alarm boxes sound a bell but do not alert the fire station. The consequences of this are obvious. Consider the scenario in which a weekend passerby spots a fire on the SUSC campus. Unable to reach a phone in the locked buildings, he pulls the lever of a nearby fire alarm box. The bell sounds and he awaits the arrival of help -- in vain. Were the deceptive box not there, he would have continued his search for a phone. Is this situation correctable? Perhaps a sign at each such box would help: PULL LEVER, THEN PHONE FIRE DEPARTMENT. This might mitigate the effects of the above scenario, which apparently could take place in many communities. My apologies for suggesting that the problem was unique to Cedar City. Michael Cannon 407 Pruitt Ave. Los Alamos, NM 87544 Editor: TO: Name Withheld and all other interested in-terested citizens of Cedar City. It disgusts me whenever I read a shortsighted, short-sighted, inaccurate, unfounded, misinformed mis-informed letter to the editor. The citizens of this community had better take a good hard look at who and what is trying to jam mis-information down their throats, and for what purpose. The proposed bond issue has been in the planning for over two years and its purpose pur-pose is to double the capacity of water into Cedar City, and it will not serve any special area or special interest. The additional ad-ditional storage is for the whole City and will not feed any special area, as suggested. This additional storage and additional water will prevent rationing, in case of a pump or water line breakdown, it will also insure orderly growth of our community. Why have the bond election on August 1, 1978? One big reason - Cost - . We feel we will receive more and better bids if we'ean have constructrion start in the slow fall and winter months. Also, we would like the main water lines to be carrying water into your homes by late Spring 1979. If anyone is to "gain" from this bond issue it is the average citizens, as no disruption in water use will occur. I am extremely aware that the Kolob water is Cedar City's answer to the future, but we must continue to upgrade and add to our present system until this water becomes a reality. I am also fully aware of rising costs, that are attacking everyone, but water is the best bargain around. Lets pull together, not against each other. Lets build Cedar City. F. Gordon Slack Councilman, Water Editor: On Monday, July 17th, we witnessed a most impressive marching band exhibition, at the Thunderbird Stadium. At this time we would like to commend Joe Lamoreaux and the Music Dept. as well as any other community members that assisted in making this presentation possible. We hope to see an event of this calibre become an annual event for our summer enjoyment. Mr. & Mrs. Rich Wilson |
