Show SU sponsors Energy Education Workshop Local residents are invited to attend several energy-realted programs Saturday as part of an Energy Education Workshon being held at Southern Utah State College. The workshop has been primarily designed for educators by the SUSC School of Continuing Education and Energy and Man's Environment, a non-profit organization orginating in Portland, Oregon. "There are several meetings which will be of special interest to southern Utah residents," Dr. Phil Carter, workshop director said, "everyone interested in energy and energy conservation is invited to join us." The workshop begins Friday evening at 7 p.m. in the Old Administration Building Seminar Room. The keynote address will be held again Saturday morning at 8 a.m. in the Music Recital Hall. Speakers for this session will be Dr. Earl Grossen, assistant professor at Brigham Young University; Ed Dalton, regional EME director and Bernell Lovcridge, EME training member and teacher at Viewmont High School. All workshop meetings will be held on Saturday in the Music Recital Hall, Dr. Carter reports. At 9 a.m., Dr. Gary Crosby, director of geothermal exploration ex-ploration of Phillip's Petroleum Company, will discuss developments in geothermal findings and the feasibility for future neergy use. At 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., duplicate sessions will be held dealing with an energy simulator and teaching plans and projects for the educator. The energy silumator, a sort of mini-computer, effectively projects energy uses for various time periods, and by using input from session members, can help realistically portray various energy outlooks for the future. EME trainer Bernell Loveridge will conduct this session. Gary Dalton, teacher at the Salt Lake Detention Center and EME trainer, will conduct the educators session on ideas in teaching energy education to the high school age student. "Energy of the Future-Are all the Choices bad?" will be discussed at 11 a.m. by Janet Gordon, Cedar City environmentalist. en-vironmentalist. This program will also be held in the Music Recital Hall. At 1 p.m., Dr. Art Jones, state energy specialist, will present information regarding Governor Scott Matheson's booklet about energy conservation which was recently distributed to all Utah homeowners. Persons attending this presentation are asked to bring their booklets to the meeting for easy reference. Pete Paris, division manager for California Pacific Utilities, will discuss "The Inequity of Government Power" at 3 p.m. This discussion about government govern-ment versus private ownership will be followed by a question and answer period. Dr. Carter reports. A film entitled "Critical Choices" will conclude the day's activities. The 3:30 presentation deals with energy-related problems facing the American population. Dr. Carter, an EME trainer and SUSC education faculty member, will conduct the session. "We are faced with many hard choices in regards to energy and its use," Dr. Carter said, "the longer we prolong making any decisions in regards to these problems, the more difficult they will become." "The Energy Education Worshop is being held to train educators to best teach energy-related energy-related subjects," he said, "it is also being offered as a valuable source of information for the public." Additional workshop sessions will be held March 4-5 and 11-12. The public is invited to attend these sessions also. |
