Show Cedar honored for 1976 Improvements An award honoring the citizens of Cedar City for the amount of time they contributed con-tributed for city-wide improvements during 1970 was presented to the Cedar City Council Thursday while the council placed a fee on landfill use by county residents. Mrs. Jerry Winger, representing the Utah Community Progress Awards Committee, presented the Utah State 2nd Place Award of $225 in cash. Mrs. Winger said the only stipulation on the cash is that it go to community improvement projects. The award points out the effort made by citizens in improving their community. The council said the residents of the city can take pride in themselves for having taken part in this recognition. Effective March 1, new landfill fees will be levied against county residents using the city dumpsite. The council said vehicle registration address will provide identification. iden-tification. Fees will be: Minimum fee - $1; pickup trucks up to three quarter ton rating - $2 per load; one ton truck or larger - $5 per load. A collection person will be placed near the entrance gate. The council reminded residents of Cedar City that they have open use of the landfill and will not be charged during regular open hours. The action comes as a result of numerous county resident using the landfill rather than the county "Smith Pit" site. The county no longer subsidizes the city landfill since acquisition of the county landfill. The council also reported public response to the proposed Electric Service Study and Recommendation Committee has been "disappointing, with not enough names submitted from which to name a committee." The council said it had been their intent to name the committee at Thursday's meeting. Selection will therefore be delayed until the March 3 council meeting, as names are still being welcomed and solicited. Bids were opened on public liability insurance for Cedar City, with the bid from Froyd Insurance Agency, Cedar City, being the lone bidder. The bid provided protection as stipulated, the council said, and was accepted. The council also authorized City Manager Mike Embley to contract with Utah Job Service (Division of Employment Em-ployment Security) for the placement of two full-time and one part-time employee as part of the CETA Public Employment program. Assignments for the three new employees em-ployees were: one for parks and cemetery, one as an assistant in the inspection in-spection department, and one part-time animal control officer. The council also met with committee chairman of various city groups to get status reports. Among those present and reporting were: Bill Lunt, chairman of Planning and Zoning; Robert L. Gardner of the Board of Adjustments; Richard Brown of the airport committee; and Elene Jensen of the library committee. In closing the meeting, the council reminded residents of Leigh Hill to attend a Sewer Improvement District public hearing February 24, 7:00. An open meeting for discussion and adjustment of Water rates within the city is set for March 3, during council meeting. - . |
