The Bureau of Land Management's Paria Canyon Primitive Area received 955 visitors during the 1976 calendar .year. Sixteen percent more people hiked through the canyon than during the previous year. Paria Canyon, one of BLM's first established primitive areas, is located 40 miles east of Kanab. The area extends south of U.S. Highway 89 to Lee's Ferry in Arizona. Major access points are located in Utah, but 80 percent of the primitive area is in Arizona. During the early spring and summer seasons the canyon is quite heavily used, mainly when spring break periods occur at western colleges and universities. univer-sities. The months of April through June accounted for over 77 percent of the total use received during this past year. One third of the total yearly usage was recorded on 11 calendar days during the spring hiking season. Hiking conditions are most favorable in Paria Canyon during the periods from March through June and September through November. Excessively hot or cold temperatures and dangerous flash flooding limit hiking during other portions of the year.
