Show Jones' promotion bill passes Joint Resolution opposes Carter's dam cut Utah's Legislatures Tuesday suspended the rules and met to adopt a Joint Resolution opposing op-posing the action recently announced an-nounced by President Jimmy Carter that would discontinue Bonneville Unit of the Central Utah Project. Representative Garth Jones stated that the Joint Resolution suggests to the president that the much needed Central Utah Project is already providing public works employment -- one of the avenues that is being proposed by the President as a means of coping with unemployment unem-ployment trends in the nation. In a report to the Iron Countv Record, representative Jones indicated that the Governor has signed, this past week, two bills sponsored by him, both dealing with a change in automobile license plates for the State of Utah. One of the bills, passed by the Legislature and signed by the Governor would permit personalization per-sonalization of license plates and the second bill would permit the state to design a new plate with a slogan and a color combination that would make the plate a more effective advertising tool, Rep. Jones suggested. The House in action Monday approved a House Joint Resolution proposed by Rep. Jones that would provide for an interum committee to address the subject of how the state can get the most use out of our federal lands. "It is my intent that the state should study all avenues and concepts that would give the state more control over the use of Federal lands within the state's boundaries and possibly the return of some Federal lands to private ownership," Jones stated. The Resolution is expected to come before the Senate sometime this week. Another bill, jointly sponsored by Rep. Jones and Rep. Washburn, Wash-burn, has passed the House. The bill would eliminate the requirement of registration of hand guns in the State of Utah. "The bill is in opposition to gun control laws that are being considered on a national basis," the Representative indicated. Rep. Jones has further introduced in-troduced a resolution proposing that the Federal Government not pursue their efforts on gun control. Currently that resolution is in committee. Another bill, Substitute Bill III, sponsored by Rep. Jones passed the House in action Monday. This bill was designed to help the travel industry in Utah and particularly the southern Utah area. It would allow the placing of signs along Interstate Highway High-way systems identifying services (continued on page 3) Legislative action . . . (continued from page 1) and special activities and events. "Without some opportunity to place signs on our freeway systems tourists have no way of knowing what is going on in the communities that they bypass," Jones stated. He further indicated that "Utah is considered a pass through state and hopefully the ability to use highway signs would help hold tourists for longer periods of time," Rep. Jones indicated. |
