Show fToijgues I JayWamsley ClfCCksJ Some random thoughts on power and electricity and associated subjects: -Everyone has an axe to grind and the dollar never hurts when it is coming out of someone else's pocket. -If a survey was taken before all the public meetings and radio talk shows concerning opinions about electric power in Cedar City and a second survey taken after all the hub-bub, I'll bet the results wouldn't differ two percent either way. But, the meetings were highly informative and very interesting and the Jaycees should be commended for arranging and spearheading the idea. Leon Johnson gave an excellent ex-cellent presentation on conserving con-serving energy and household tips. But all the good that was accomplished by Mr. Johnson's remarks was totally disolved when we were told by the following speaker after a pointed question: "You are paying more if you use less energy because you are on a different rate base." Now I don't know all there is to know about rate bases and I'm certain there are reasons for them (one being: if the pumpers were charged the same as a residential customer for the number of killowatts used, they would go out of business.) But, I do know that Mr. Johnson's speech did very little to persuade conservation methods when the audience learned they are penalized for conserving, in many situations. That's where a change needs to take place. -It's too bad Utah Power and Light can't capture and sell the electricity generated between Pete Paris and Carl Palmer and run it down the Sigurd line. That could lower your bill for sure. --It's good to see so many people so interested in a topic. It completely destroys comments concerning public apathy in today's society. -Whenever the topic of energy and utility costs are discussed, I can see in my mind's eye an Arab sitting with his feet up, smiling. I hope he is enjoying himself. Cheap. Chicken. Typical baloney. What kind of confidence can Congress hope to inspire among the American people when it won't even face up to a vote on a pay raise for its members? They bring it up just before a recess and let it take effect while on vacation. Without a vote. We hear calls from Washington for the Average Joe to sacrifice. The words sound nice. But they are hollow when the lawmakers permit a $13,000 annual pay raise while the median income in this country is $14,000. That's median, not average. (Interesting that last year the congressmen turned down a pay hike. But of course, last year was an election year.) If their consciences are totally clear on the subject, why not a roll call vote on it? " I - . , ' ' 1 it .A - r - y& i ' ' k i. I I f EiJ z&iZliz. fT -fr ACCEPTS FOK COMMUNITY. This plaque and debate jacket displayed by Mayor Kerry Jones were presented by the Debate Coach Steve Van Dyke. The presentation, according to Van Dyke was symbolic of the total cooperative effort of the community at the recently staged Lincoln Day Forensics meet. "We hoped that the Mayor could represent the entire community in accepting our appreciation," ap-preciation," he said. |
