I'm sure it was a slip of the tonguo Rex, but it fore-ably fore-ably brought home to me the need that we as American's have to see that a belief in God is still fundamental to this country, the principals by which it was founded, and the every present need of preserv ing our system of government. A note from the Commerce magazine points out that the Federal Income Tax Laws are so complicated, as a result of repeated congressional additions, addi-tions, that it runs 930 pages and is "explained" by some 17,000 pages of court decisions and Internal Revenue regula- Back in the days of what has now become known as the "Great Depression," many of the popular political leaders lead-ers of the day rested their programs and policies on the thesis that the U.S. had reach-ed reach-ed maturity. Instead of looking to a future fu-ture of further expansion, they believed the time had come to "share the wealth." They foresaw tecnology as having reached its limits. And, back in the 1930's, people accepted ac-cepted this philosophy or slag-nation. slag-nation. We seem to be in a new era of threatened stagnation. It is politically popular to advocate advo-cate putting a lid on progress for the imagined sake of the environment. Technological advance and economic growth must be stopped, say some of these prophets who view the future through dark glasses. Present-day Present-day environmental negativism negativ-ism resembles the economic negativisim of more than a generation ago. And, in the future, it will probably be just another oddity in the pages of history. Certainly we don't advocate that we should not be concerned about pollution and the environment, but we do believe that technology of today can and will meet the problem to the extent growth and development can continue. Many people have an exag- gerated idea about how much prolit a business makes. A story in the Monsanto Company Com-pany magazine makes the fol-lowing fol-lowing presentation: In a recent poll the Opinion Research Corporation asked the following question: "Let us take all the money a corporation cor-poration has left after paying for materials, supplies, rent, heat and the like. This money shared by owners and employees. em-ployees. What is your judgement judge-ment as to the percentage of it going to employees and the percentage going to owners?" The result indicated that Americans believed 75 cents out of every dollar of income went to owners and 25 cents to employees. U.S. Commerce statistics on the national average av-erage show that employee compensation was over six times as large as net profit and over 14 times as large as dividends paid. Interesting Independence Day celebration in Cedar City this past week and what with visitors, family, weather and all, it was one of the largest lurnoufcs in the history of the event. The Cedar City Lions Club is to be commended for its efforts of organization and dedication to providing of worthwhile community celebration. cel-ebration. It was interesting, however, in the flag ceremony at the park to discover that someone some-one has finally accomplished |
