Show I i 1 Engineering class members conduct stress experiment Nine members of th. South-cm South-cm Utah St ;t0 College mechanical me-chanical entering class have demonstrated in a practical way the breaking point of a seemingly strong construction. As a spring quarter project, the group constructed mina-turc mina-turc suspension bridges of three-sixteenths of an inch wooden dowells. The small re- j plicas were suspended be- j twci'n two tables. As n test of strength a hanger hang-er loaded witli weights was suspended from the center point of each bridge. Streets on the dowell girders was increased in-creased until tln bridge gave iway. i A weight of 120 pounds was required to break the strongest strong-est bridge. The weakest broke at 81 pounds. Thomas A. Smith, class instructor, in-structor, said the participants entered into the project with remarkable entliusism. "They had a lot of fun as well as i gaining practical knowledge," he said. "I don't know which they enjoyed the most, building build-ing the bridges or breaking them-" Class members participating in the project were James Brophy, Gevena, N. Y.; Tristan DeMille, Rockville; Randy Eyre, Brigham City; Mark Hansen, Richfield; Dennis Long, Cedar City; Dennis Porter, Por-ter, Cedar City; Mark Russell, j Roekford, 111.; Mark Wright, I Alamo, Nev., and Chris Knud son, Kanarraville. |
