Show Mayor Loren Whetten report on air service hearing in Utah Mayor Whetten presented the case for the Cedar City Airport and the need for con-.iuation con-.iuation of regional carrier facilities as preoentiy provided provid-ed by Air West. He indicated that he presented pre-sented two points in favor of the Cedar City Airport and air service here. First was the fact that the Cedar City Airport serves several southern south-ern Utah communities as well as part of northern Arizona and.eastern Nevada. Specific advantages' of the service were listed as follows: 1. Flow of Parks travel, no longer served by railroad; 2. The area serves as regional headsuarters for several federal fed-eral and state offices; 3." Expanded Ex-panded needs with the development devel-opment of Brian Head Ski Re sort; 4. Utilization by several large and smaller industries in the five county area; and 5. Significance of the service to the development and expansion expan-sion of Southern Utah State College-. Mayor Whetten also indicat. ed that he Introduced into the hearing a resolution of the Five County Organization which advocated continuation of the regional service and supporting subsidies as may be necessary to insure the perpetuation per-petuation of the air service. The council also noted that he city has for the past several sev-eral years applied for matching match-ing funds through the Federal Aviation Administration and the State for extension and (Continued on Page Three) Report on air service (Continued from Front Page) upgrading of the municipal facility to accomodate DC'J jet utilization. Property for the extension has already been acquired and FAA and state officials have indicated a high priority for the Cedar City project in the near future, fu-ture, the Mayor reported. Mayor Loren Whetten re ported to the Cedar City Coun- ; cil Thursday evening on his ! recent appearance before the U. S. Senate Aviation subcommittee sub-committee hearing, chaired by ! Utah Senator Frank E. Moss ' in Salt Lake City. The hearing, he indicated, dealt with the adequacy of service and subsidies of the 1 -smaller airports of the state. j |
