Show Cedar Leaders View Grand Junction Shoppers Park Film A "shopper's park," designed design-ed primarily for the convenience conven-ience and delight of the shopper, shop-per, brought Grand Junction, Colorado an Ail-American city award in 1962. Since that time, city planners plan-ners from all over the world have flocked to this city to study their plan, which was executed entirely without State or Federal assistance. "Operation Foresight" is the title of a film depicting this accomplishment and it was shown at a large public gathering on the CSU campus on Wednesday night. Viewers were interested to learn that business was increased in-creased by three million dol-ars dol-ars in the very first year after af-ter the park was finished. Traffic accidents were cut in I half. But happiest of all, per- haps, were the area's shoppers shop-pers who enjoy the convenience conven-ience and beauty of a city that cared enough to provide this inviting atmosphere. Large curved planters, fountains, foun-tains, benches, lighting the visitor is impressed and ! spreads the word, bringing an ever-increasing amount of lo- i cal and tourist trade. Increased revenue to the city from increased sales more than made up for some losses in parking meter fees. The film was sponsored by the beautification committee and was acquired through the efforts of Forrest Hunter, beautification chairman. Lynn Uibell, Coordinator of Public Services and Community Commun-ity Development at CSU, gave a slide presentation showing what other communities all over the United States have accomplished along these lines. Mr. Uibell explained the planning process and the economics ec-onomics involved. Because of unexpected early scheduling, public showing of the film had to be called hastily. A telephone committee commit-tee to notify all business owners own-ers was instrumental in securing se-curing a good attendance. This committee consisted of Olga Beck, Margaret Gerring, Diane Smith, LaRue Schmutz, Vivian Little, Ann Judd, Marie Mar-ie Gowen, LaReen Carley, Zina Rigby, JoAnn Nugent, Pearlie Hughes, Jane Jergen-sen, Jergen-sen, Loraine Juvelin, Evelyn Corry. j |
