The state of Utah has applied for the funds to construct three sections of highway in remote Garfield County and adjacent areas. The projects include 37 miles of paved road on U-95 from Trachyte Junction to a connec-tion connec-tion with a National Park Service road in the Glen Canyon National Nation-al Recreation Area, which strecth of road would cost an estimated $3.1 million; improvement of a county road from Boulder to the Trachyte Junction-Bullfrog Basin road, estimated to cost $500,00; and a third section to build a road from near Bullfrog Basin recreation facilities on Lake Powell Pow-ell to a connection with an existing ex-isting road from Escalante to Hole-in-the-Rock. The estimated cost of this portion of the ppli-cation ppli-cation is $1.5 million. Utah's two U. S. Senators have made appeals to the Department of Commerce for approval of Jong-pending applications for $6.4 million in Federal assistance for redevelopment area road construction con-struction in the Lake Powell area. Sen. Frank E. Moss, D-Utah, held a meeting in his office with Assistant Secretary of Commerce (Economic Development) Eugene P. Foley and Weston E. Hamilton, Chairman of the Utah Road Commission Com-mission and Utah Highway Director Dir-ector Henry C. Helland. Senator Wallace F. Bennett, R-Utah, R-Utah, directed his appeal to Commerce Com-merce Secretary John F. Connor asking for approval of the funds. Sen. Bennett, who has legislation legisla-tion pending in the Senate Interior Inter-ior Committee calling for a "Golden "Gol-den Circle" road and parkway survey of the Southern Utah area, said "approval of this application ap-plication could be used as part of my proposal which would eventually open up vast areas of the State to travelers." Sen. Bennett told the Secretary that "most current road development develop-ment is coming from the South. It's time some emphasis was given to Utah's needs where more than 90 percent of the lake is." Sen. Moss said that the highway high-way construction will provide long term economic benefits to Garfield County and all Southeastern South-eastern Utah by opening access to our moset available product outdoor recreation to millions of additional tourists."
