Show Letter to th Editor Editor Iron County Record Cedar City, Utah Open Letter Dear Mr. Corry, As a past president of the Chamber of Commerce I would exercise a privilege of presenting present-ing to the readers of the Iron County Record the opposing views to your letter dated February Feb-ruary 15, as I see them. First of all the resolution, passed by the Chamber Board (of which I am presently a member): mem-ber): We (the Chamber) being interested in the improvement and progress of the community in which we live and do business have supported this step of definite def-inite Improvement to the highway high-way that will pass through our community. In supporting this improvement the real issue Is not that of controlling businesses that would lead people to believe but a necessary step in controlling control-ling access traffic and thus becoming be-coming a highway to handle traffic instead of sheep trails which can be entered or left at any point. If this type of control a brochure as you mentioned In your letter through the combined combin-ed efforts of the "Five County Organization" and the Chamber of Commerce. This brochure has been well received at the point where vacations are "planned" and that Is at the travel shows to which Milt has been sent. We (the entire community), can not wait until the highway bypasses to compete for the tourist tour-ist dollar and our efforts have taken our money which otherwise other-wise could be used to paint welcome wel-come signs. Bear this in mind, from a survey taken in Salt Lake City of some 120 cars ONLY 4 hadn't predetermined where they were going during their vacation. vaca-tion. Cedar City's Chamber of Commerce has been such a leader lead-er in recognizing this fact AND DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT that even the Utah Tourist and Publicity has aided our cause and followed our example. It is a shame that your professed pro-fessed leadership wasn't used during the past years D. W. for as the saying goes, "a pulling MULE can't kick!!" JACK HAYES wasn t necessary D. w., wny tnen would you have a fence around your property but rather allow al-low people to cut across your lawn and over your flowers. It is noo bad the progress calls for curtailing such activity and it is ;a shame that we even need to follow streets and highways but rather take off on our, own and travel as we please. The second point I would wish to oppose is your statement pertaining per-taining to the activity ol the Chamber of Commerce. In your letter are we to believe that noth- " Ing has been done since D. W. CORRY was president? Milt Jol-ley Jol-ley and the chamber board were the instruments in bringing to Cedar City the "Canvas Plant" and "Brian Head Ski Area". Both -of which the entire community lias an Interest in financially. "These two projects were com-VpJeted com-VpJeted to help the ENTIRE community com-munity and not just one person's selfish interests. It is strange to me D. W. that a person could have such a turnabout turn-about from the interest of the entire community to that of self-When self-When I was president of the chamber you came to the board to ask that a slide narration of your personal interests be taken to the "Travel Shows" to which Milt was selling our area. This was denied because we had a slide narration of our own selling sell-ing the entire area and not just one man's interests. The Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce does have such |
