Show programs will be given at the campground on Monday, Friday, and Saturday nights for all who wish to attend. Park Superintendent Harry P. Linder estimates that more than 300,000 visitors will pass through the monument this calendar year. Capital Reef National Monument Will Observe Birthday On August 2, Capitol Reef National Na-tional Monument will observe its twenty-ninth anniversary. Much has ooeured since the monument was first established by the presidential pres-idential proclamation of Franklin Frank-lin D. Roosevelt in 1937. Because of Its isolation and the primitive roads leading to it, Capitol Reef had few visitors in the early years of its existence. In 1954, less than 400 visitors braved the rough, undependable dirt roads into the monument In 1955, when a paved road was built into the monument from the west, 7,499 persons saw Capitol Cap-itol Reef. Seven years later, in 19G2, only 18 miles of Utah Highway High-way 21 remained unpaved bet ween the monument and Hanks-ville. Hanks-ville. That year, travel to the monument reached 163,508. The last portion of Utah Highway 24 was paved in 1965 and travelers through the monument numbered number-ed 274,109. Capitol Reef now boasts a modern 53 unit campground, camp-ground, new Visitor Center, and a larger staff to serve those who visit the monument.
