Show Cedar American Little League Wins Two, Loses to St. George in Area Tournament Play Cedar City American Little League Lea-gue won their way i,nto the cham-pionship cham-pionship of the Area Tournament held this past week in Caliente, N'ev. before losing out to St. George Sunrise by a score of 3 to 1. In the opening round of play, the Cedar City crew defeated Parowan by a score of 8 to 2, then disposed of host Lincoln County 10 to 3 to win their way Into the championship game. Lincoln County in an opening round game defeated Milford by the impressive score of 28 to 1, while St. George defeated West Zion 5 to 3 in the other opener. St. George then drew a bye into the championship, and by virtue of their winning the championship cham-pionship will travel to Sunset in Northern Utah for the district playoff to be staged next week. Ronnie Adams was on the mound for the Cedar win over Parowan. Parowan took an early lead in the game with a two run homer but in the third Cedar American came back to push in two runs to even the score. The score remained tied through the fifth inning before the Cedar crew pushed in five runs to win finally going away. Some fine pitching by starter Brent Hunter and relief work by Billy Heyborne coupled with hitting, hit-ting, including home runs by Doug Hirschi, and Ronnie Adams, pushed the Cedar American past Lincoln County in the second round of play. Cedar pushed in three runs in the first inning of play. In the second frame Lincoln County came back with two runs but in the third Cedar agai.n moved out in front and were never seriously threatened again. Manager of the Cedar team, Matias Quintinalla, indicated that the Cedar team played an excellent defensive game -- probably prob-ably their best of tournament competition. In the championship game the Cedar team ran up against a pitcher who they were unable to hit. Bradshaw of St. George set the Cedar team down well, although al-though they threatened on several sever-al occasions on walks and errors in the field. Twice Cedar loaded the bases and was unable to score. St. George pushed in one run in the second, then in the fourth added two more on a home run. In the bottom of the sixth inning. Ronnie Meyers fot on on a single, moved to second on a passed ball. Robert Carmoni then grounded to second and on the play at first Meyers moved to third, a play at third was overthrown and Meyers came on in to score the only Cedar tally in the game. Ronnie Adams was on the mound for Cedar in the championship cham-pionship game. |
