Show Ivan Decker Attends Reunion of Weston, Ida. Basketball Team From last Friday's issue of the Salt Lake Tribune we picked up a news item that should be of interest to some of the members of the community. The article was about a reunion of a basketball basket-ball coach and six members of the squad he coached to the Intermountain In-termountain High School championship cham-pionship in 1922. The coach was Ivan Decker, former for-mer prominent resident .of Parowan Paro-wan and one time coach at the Parowan High School, and his team from the Weston, Idaho High School. Decker and six of his eight-man squad gathered for a reunion in the Westen LDS Ward recreation hall, just 44 years after their 1922 triumph. Coach Decker lettered in football foot-ball and track at the U of U and was a members the school's basketball bas-ketball team. He coached the Weston team on his first vear out of school, and came to the Parowan High School as coach two years later. That same year he took the Intermountain title, F. C. Van Buren took the first Parowan High school basketball team to the state meet, the first one ever to go from here. In that tournament the Parowan crew downed the 1921 state champs from Logan in the opening game. The next night they met the team from Lehi High School and were defeated. The Lehi team went on to win the Utah State Lehi team which Ivan Decker's championship, and it was this Weston team defeated by a 28-27 score to win the intermountain title. |
