Show WHAT DOES THE BIBLE TEACH? The Conquest of Canaan By Bob Reynolds After the giving of the Mosaic Law, which we noticed in our last article, the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness for many years. During this period Moses, their faithful leader, died. After the death of Moses, God appointed another leader for the nation. His name was Joshua. The story of Joshua, and the conquest of Canaan by the Iraelites under his leadership, is found in the book of Joshua. Joshua led the people over the Jordan River and into Canaan, the land of promise. In the path of the Israelites lay the great walled city of Jericho. God commanded the people to do certain things and when they had done all that lie had commanded, the walls fell and the city was conquered. The people, by doing as Cod had commanded them, demonstrated their trust and faith in Him. Thus it is written, writ-ten, "By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days" (Hebrews 11:30). The next city before the Israelites was Ai, small in comparison com-parison with Jericho; but Joshua and his people were soundly defeated because of the sin of one Israelite named Achan. He had taken that which did not belong to him. Achan was punished with death and Ai was then easily conquered. This taught the people that God would not tolerate sin among His children! Later the nation went on to completely subdue Canaan and possess all of the land that God had promised to give them. Then Joshua divided the land among the people according ac-cording to the directions that God had given to Moses. With the people now settled in the land of promise, Joshua assembled them at Shechem for his farewell address ad-dress in which he exhorted them to be faithful to God. He closed with the words, "Choose you this day whom ye will serve . . . but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" (Joshua 24:15). Having thus exhorted the people, peo-ple, Joshua died. e e e Are you interested in learning more about what the Bible teaches?
