Show CSU Hard Court Players Return From Gruelling Chaffey Invitational College of Southern Utah basketball bas-ketball squad returned Sunday from sunny California a little bit wiser, but with a fine showing show-ing against the top clubs In the country in the annual Chaffey Invitational tournament. The Broncos, Waxed by Santa Ana in the opener 79 to 62, bounced back with a 30 point win over Santa Monica, 84 to 54, dumped a highly rated club from East Los Angeles, 79 to 72 to win ther way into the consolation consola-tion finals of the 16 team tourney. tour-ney. In the finals Saturday evening the Broncos lost their- steam in the second half of play and Mt. San Antonio, in the final seconds of play hit two foul throws to defeat the Broncos 54 to 53. Fullerton College went on to win the mammoth 16-team tournament tour-nament with an easy victory over Cerritos in the championship game. East Los Angeles, whom the Broncos defeated in the semifinals semi-finals of the consolation round, was one of the highly ranked clubs in the tournament, having lost by one point to Fullerton in the opening round, 88 to 87. Earlier in the week the Broncos had lost a game to Glendale, Calif., 62 to 5-1. Glendale also entered In the Chaffey tourney finished up in third place in that event, defeating San Diego in the final night of play after losing los-ing to Cerritos in the second round. CSU is the only out-of-state club entered enter-ed in the event, which features the top junior college teams In southern California, Including Fullerton, East Los Angeles, Cerritos, Cer-ritos, Glendale, host club Chaffey, Chaf-fey, Orange Coast, Riverside, Santa San-ta Monica, Compton, San Bernardino, Bernar-dino, Santa Ana, Mt. San Antonio, Anton-io, Harbor and San Diego. From that event Glendale and Compton will participate in the CSU Invitational Tournament in Cedar City Jan. 8 and 9. Coach Cleo Petty went with his four big men big men on the CSU squad at least through most of the five games. They include Dean Conant, Donald Burton, Elliot Jordon and Thayne Judd, and he put a variety of little men with thls combination for most of the games. Conant turned In a fine performance and was leading scorer on the trip and is now the leading scorer on the squad. Against Glendale conant co-nant hit 10 and equalled that mark against East Los Angeles In all five contests he was In the double figures. In the ten games played Conant Is averaging averag-ing 12.1 points per game. He is followed closely by Donald Don-ald Burton and Elliot Jordon in the scoring department. Burton hit 18 against Santa Ana, 14 against ELA and 14 against Santa San-ta Monica and Mt. San. His total to-tal output is 98 points in the 10 encounters with Jordon totaling 97. His best effort in California was 16 against Santa Monica. Highlight of the entire trip for the Broncos was the 79 to 72 win over East Los Angeles. First half of play saw the Broncos trallinp with ELA hitting a phenominal 67 from the field. They had 20 fieldgoals In 30 attempts. The Broncos were not far behind with a 55 shooting mark and they continued the pace in the second half of play to upset the favored ELA squad. In the consolation finals, the five game road trip proved to be too much as a tiring Bronco five, leading at halftlme by a score of 35 to 23, fell behind as much as 11 points in the second half of play only to put on a surging drive in the final minutes of play. Trailing by five points, 52 to 47, Eric Gardner nit three buckets buc-kets from outside to put the Broncos Bron-cos into thp 1mi1 S3 tn With only 12 seconds remaining In the game Belliston fouled Strickland of Mt. Sac and he hit both attempts at-tempts to put Mt. Sac in the lead 54 to 53. Broncos worked the ball back Into forecourt for one last shot by Gardner, but he missed and the Broncos had to be content con-tent with eighth place in the tourney. It was a matter of free throws, however, that proved the Broncos' Bron-cos' downfall In the consolation championship game. Outscoring Mt. Sac, 25 to 19 from the field, a total of 12 points, CSU hit only three of 11 attempts from the foul line, while Ht. Sac hit 16 in 22 attempts to defeat the Broncos. |
