A study of problems that need solving in the southwest section of the city as a result of school locations and resultant residential residen-tial growth was started at the meeting of the commission Monday Mon-day night. The city engineering department Is already working on an overall street planning program, and the commission has recommended to the city administration admin-istration that the department be given every support possible in completing the plans. The fact that the route of the interstate highway through the city area has not been definitely announc-road announc-road officials have promised that early action will be taken on the highway location so as not to de- lay further city planning. In keeping with unit planning on street development, the commission com-mission Monday urged that a definite plan be adopted for the widening as much as possible of Center Street from the high school to the west city limits, or as far as the street is now opened. This recommendation was made so that contemplated curb development at the high school football field would coincide coin-cide with a complete street plan. State been made in the past for widening wid-ening and improving 400 South Street from Main Street to the west city limits. Anothe; action designed to encourage en-courage street improvement was the approval of the expenditure of planning commission funds for the purchase of an additional addition-al set of forms to rent to property prop-erty owners desiring to Install curb and gutter. A similar set of forms purchased by the commission commis-sion has been In use for some time, and additional forms are needed to meet the demand. Several years ago a parcel of land on the south side of 400 South Street at 450 West, was deeded to the city to be used as a street. However, development of Circle Drive subdivision made the proposed street unnecessary, and the Planning Commission at its meeting Monday approved a recommendation to the city that the proposed street be abandoned and the property revert to private use. The group also spent considerable consider-able time Monday In studying a tentative plat of a sub-division on the Gordon Smith property west of 1500 West Street and south of 200 North. Several changes were recommended to the sub-division planners and it Is expected that the final plat will be submitted In the near future, so that development can be started. A number of other items were considered at the meeting, with final action deferred until further furth-er study can be completed. The next meeting of the commission will be held on Jan. 19, at which time action on these matters and on any new problems that may arise, will be considered. |
