Show Teacher Role The role of the teacher in the handwriting program is very Important. Im-portant. The teacher's writing is a model for pupils. Even the teacher of advanced subjects needs to be concerned about her handwriting. The illegible scrawl is no sign of distinction or schol-ship. schol-ship. It Is a hindrance to the teacher and the pupil. The teacher should be able to write well and rapidly In manuscript man-uscript or cursive on the chalkboard, chalk-board, on charts, and on paper. The chalkboard is one of her chief means for cieating a desire de-sire in her pupils to write and for helping them to visualize and memorize the letter forms. In demonstrating good handwriting on the chalkboard, the teacher should keep her body out of the line of vision of her pupils. As she writes, the pupils should be able to observe both the process and the finished product. Children learn to write most easily In natural situations. They need to write names, labels, titles, ti-tles, directions, notices, invitations, invita-tions, and "stories." Any of this writing is the occasion for a lesson les-son in handwriting. Later there are daily practice periods. Today good teachers realize that handwriting U important. They are observant of children's readiness to write, nrovide experience exper-ience to develop this, allow sufficient suf-ficient time to teach writing, are good models, and teach it effectively. effect-ively.
