It was unusual that in all three games the final margin was four points, and in both of the contests that the T Birds lost, the game was tied with 30 seconds se-conds of play remaining. The Thunderbirds opened against San Bernardino Wednesday Wednes-day morning and lost 68 to 64. In the second round of play against Citrus, in the consolation bracket, the T-Birds came up with 63 to 5'J victory leading throughout the game, but never by a large margin; and in Friday Fri-day evening's battle, Coach Boyd Adams' crew lost another close one to host Chaffey College by a! score of 62 to Iti. In both losses key calls played an important part in the game and in both instances the games, were actually won or lost, de- I lending on a point of view at j the free throw lane. California crew posession and they quickly converted it for two points and an important lead. One chance by the T-Birds failed and San Bernardino in the final seconds came up with a cripple with the T-Birds pressing for the I final four point spread. I In Friday night's game, in I which the T-Birds lost to Chaffey, Chaf-fey, it was personal fouls that I I made a big difference. Four of . the starting five fouled out of; the game in the final two minuets min-uets of play and again a tie I score was broken in the final I seconds of play following a vio- j lation by the young Thunderbirdj crew. j Coach Adams was impressed ' with the showing however. On the guard line, Paul West, the smallest of the starters, showed show-ed probably the most improvement improve-ment of anyone on the squad and proved his ability to do a number of things, among them that of taking charge of setting up the plays. Marian Roper and LaMar Pugh continued some fine work in all departments, each scoring well as well as doing some fine rebounding- Mel Wadsworth. the freshman forward, was also impressive as the leading rebounder over the three days of ball as we'll as finally finding the range atui scoring in the double figures in all three games. His outside shooting showed the biggest Improvement Im-provement in the Chaffey tournament. tourna-ment. Another bright spot was the work of DeLoy Young who carrv off the bench against Chaffey to do some fine work. He picked up two fieldgoals and had a pair taken away by infractions. Two major improvements were ' noted by Coach Adams. The first I if the need to eliminate personal fouls. The T-Birds lost men in ea'.'h game via this route and the second Is to improve the out- I side shooting. i "If we can do these two things I we'll be tough to beat," Coach ! Adams stated. |
