Show LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Enterprise, Utah July 15. 1031. Editor Iron County Record Cellar City, Utah. Dear Sir: The citizens of Enterprise and the surrounding territory feel that an injustice has been dune the Holland family because of previous publications throughout the state since Mr. Holland has been held on the Wilson case. Here are the facts about the Holland family that every man and citien in this territory can verify. Cyril T. Holland, commonly known as Tom Holland, came with his family to the Escalante Valley in February, lOJti. He immediately im-mediately became active in all civic affairs. For two years he was on the Boy Scout board. Then for two more years he was assistant as-sistant -MI Leader in the valley. Since then he has strongly supported sup-ported this organization, going with the boys on camping trips, helping them get their livestock to fairs and stock shows, etc. For two years he was chairman of the Agricultural Committee. His wife, Gladys, has also been active and interested in all civic affairs. She served as vice president presi-dent of the Parent Teachers Association As-sociation at F2nterpri.se for two years, had charge of the beauti-fication beauti-fication program for the Escalante Escal-ante Valley School, and is now vice president of the Women's Club of the valley. The couple have reared almost to manhood two boys whose records re-cords of achievement will compare com-pare with the best. The elderr son, Tom, Jr., now 18 years of age, was assistant scout director, president of his 4-II Club for two years and secretary for one year. He was on the stock judging team in 11)31 and took second place on the individual score in stock judging in the State of Utah. He was chosen to go to Boys' State during his Junior year in high school. He graduated graduat-ed from the Cedar Ciy high school in 1953 and was attending the College of Southern Utah I when he entered the service. He lis now in school with the U. S. Navy in the Electronics Division. Carl, the younger son, age 16, won first place in both County and State on a water conservation conserva-tion demonstration and won a trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma to the vegetable growers convention. He has been president of the Valley 4-H Club for the past two years. He has just returned from the 4-H Leadership School at Logan,) Utah. He is capable of taking the family tractor apart and re-assembling it, and operates all their farm equipment. Both Carl and Tom. Jr. have I won the achievement medal in 1 H work and tractor maintenance. mainten-ance. Both have taken part in the activities of the L. D. S. church" even though the family are not I members. Mr. Holland said in i regard to this: "If your church' can help teach my boys to live good clean lives and become better bet-ter citizens. I'm all for it " The large class of young men who attended the C. I. School1 with Cyril T. Holland an 1 were closely associated with him for four years can all testify that he was admired and respected by everyone. Neighbors living all around them in the valley will tell you that he lived by the Golden Rule. At any time he would drop his own work to help a fellow farmer in need. It mattered mat-tered not whether it be doctoring sick stock in the middle of the night, loaning his farm equipment equip-ment or assisting w ith their work. Those who have visited Tom since the occurance of this event, leave him quite confident that he did not commit the crime of which he has been accused, because be-cause of his calmness and composure. com-posure. There is no semblance of worry on his part showing his confidence that the law would not convict an innocent man. Though not rich in worldly goods. Cyril T. Holland is wealthy in having a multitude of friends throughout the Valley. Respecfufully submitted. Mrs. Kenneth J. Hunt |
