Show Leigh's Donate Property To A. L. Auxiliary! Turns Over Deed to Auxiliary Unit j ' I -A A x::wv !V, ' 1 rj. J 1 Mrs, Elias Leigh, right, turns over deed to valuable property prop-erty to Pearl Rogers, president of the American Legion Auxiliary. The property gift is the first action toward a permanent home for the auxiliary unit in Cedar City. Plans are already being laid to build on the property. Ever since the American Legion Auxiliary was organ-j ized in Cedar City they have been looking for a permanent! location for their meetings and activities, according' to i Mrs. Pearl Rogers, president of the group. This week the beginning of the answer of a permanent perman-ent location and building was realized when Mr. and Mrs.j Elias Leigh, long-time workers for the veterans organiza tion and the auxiliary, turned over the deed to property for the purpose of building a home for the auxiliary. The property is located just north of the Masonic Temple on Highwav 91 just south of Cedar City. According to Mrs. Rogers, extensive ex-tensive work will get under way immediately to raise funds to begin be-gin the construction of a suitable building for the Legion Auxiliary unit. Legion Boosters It is well to point out that Mr. and Mrs. Leigh have been boost ers of the Legion and Auxiliary every since the establishment of the groups. They also boast a family who have served their country well, Mrs. Rogers said. Mr. Leigh is a veteran of World War I; their eldest son, VVm. B.! Leigh, is a veteran of World War II and at the present time, Edwin is serving with the U. S. Army. The Loighs have three daughters, daugh-ters, and each is married to a man now serving with the U. S. Army. Besides a host of committee assignments as-signments through the life of the Legion and Auxiliary, Mrs. Leigh has served as unit president and district president of the auxiliary. auxil-iary. Mr. Leigh has served as post commander here in Cedar City and also as a district commander. com-mander. More Money Needed Some money, according to Mrs. Rogers, is already available for the purpose of building construc tion, but plans for raising addi- tional funds will get under way immediately. Annie Esplin, a past unit and district president, has contributed a quilt to be sold and the unit Is presently working on another to help raise some of the needed funds. Other projects are underway, she paid. The property, so graciously turned over by the Leighs, includes in-cludes enough area that the American Legion can, if it so desires, de-sires, build adjacent to the proposed pro-posed Auxiliary building. When the Auxiliary was first organized meetings were held in the Parry Building on North Main Street. Later the meeting place was moved to the Elks Hall and. eventually the auxiliary moved to the Armory on First East Street for unit meetings. Recently the unit has moved from the Armory and is currently current-ly holding meetings at the Cedar City firehouse, Mrs. Rogers stated. stat-ed. This inevitable moving prompted prompt-ed the property gift by Mr. and Mrs. Leigh, she said. "A lot of people act as though ! they're afraid that if they stand up to be counted on the Issues of the day somebody is going to swipe their chair." |
