Show Amateur Boxing Card Provides Excitement for Fans An outstanding evening of amateur ama-teur boxing featuring 10 four-round four-round matches was held at the College of Southern Utah field-house field-house Saturday evening and lo-cal lo-cal fans turned out in fine style to support the A A U hopefuls. Winners in Saturday evening's bouts will be entered in their respective re-spective weight classifications in the state A A U tournament to be held in Salt Lake City on Mar. 28, 29 and 30. One of the biggest upsets of the evening, and one of the most outstanding bouts was the decision deci-sion won by Frank Berrett of Cedar Ce-dar City over Dean Cottam of St. George. Cottam won the state A A U title last year. The victory vic-tory for Berrett will plummet him into the amateur ranks in the state tourney. Other crowd pleasing events included a four-round draw between be-tween Kenneth Benson and Ted Atherley, both of C S U. Ather-ley Ather-ley was a last minute entry in the meet to replace Thompson of St. George. Kenneth Perkins scored the only TKO of the evening eve-ning when he won over Alvin Cox both of whom are 'from Cedar City. Other decisions gave Roger Vandenberghe the nod over Herb Corry, Max Tores won over LaVar Short In a rugged battle that had both boys swinging from the opening bell; Norm Atherley de-cisioned de-cisioned Joe Bushhead of the Shis-wits Indian Reservation. The A A U event was sonsorcd by the Cedar Citv Elks Lodge , in cooperation with the C S U athletic department. |
