Show Chairmen Plan Convention "Tvr Y ; J-ow '. v--' v m v Looking over the convention booklet for the annual state conclave of the American Legion are Mrs. Lona Watson, chairman of the Auxiliary convention, and John Brown, chairman of the Legion group. These two people have been in charge of the arrangements for the three-day meet which officially got underway today. ; i't Legion Convention Opens Here Today; Registration HeavV Legionnaires from posts all over the state of Utah began arriving in Cedar City yesterday for the 31st annual Utah Department convention of the American Legion, Le-gion, August 4, 5 and 6. At the same time, Legion Auxiliary Aux-iliary members are also meeting in Cedar for their convention which is being held in conjunction conjunc-tion with the Legion conclave. The Cedar City post of the Legion and the Auxiliary are hosts during dur-ing the convention, to all the posts throughout the state. ' In addition to the regular business bus-iness sessions, the local posts have prlvided a week end of entertainment en-tertainment for the visiting groups. All the activities will be climaxed on Saturday afternoon with a parade down Main street of the Legion and Auxiliary delegates. Registration for the convention began this morning at 9 a. m. in the El Escalante hotel, with the first session being held at 10 a. m. in the Public school auditorium. audit-orium. This was a Joint session of the Legion and Auxiliary with the public also Invited to attend. Speakers at this opening session included Perry Brown, Beaumont, Texas, 'national commander of the American Legion; Franklin Riter, state department commander comman-der and Mrs. Karl Banks, state Auxiliary department president. In the afternoon the Legionnaires Legion-naires move to the Parks thea tre. Various committees will make their reports, and the convention con-vention delegates will hear addresses ad-dresses by the three top national commander candidates, one of whom Is expected to be elected at the national convention in Philadelphia at the end of August. Aug-ust. In the meantime, an auxll-iary auxll-iary executive officers' meeting will be held at 4 in the El Es-calante Es-calante hotel. A memorial session of the Legion Le-gion and Auxiliary will be held at 8 p. m. in the Public school auditorium, with state Memorial Memor-ial chairman Elizabeth Perry in charge and Commander Riter presiding and conducting. The public Is also Invited to this session ses-sion of the convention. Principal speaker will be the Rev. Ward McCabe, Westminster college, in Salt Lake City. Rev. McCabe was an army chaplain on Iwo Jlma when the American flag was raised there during the war. Friday, another session of the convention will be held In the Parks theatre, with a report from the Department commander and various department committees. The afternoon session will also be taken up in reports. The Auxiliary will hold its Frl-day Frl-day meetings in the First ward chapel. A Gold Star Mothers' Tp will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 In the LDS Institute, with Mrs. Ruth Hunter In charge. In the evening the annual Department De-partment banquet of the Legion and Auxiliary will be held at 7:30 in the El Escalante hotel. Principal speaker will be Wallace Wal-lace .F. Bennett, president of the National Association of Manufacturers. Manu-facturers. A dance will be held In the Armory building immediately immed-iately following the banquet Nomination, election and Installation In-stallation of the State Department Depart-ment officers will be taken up Saturday morning. Awards will also be made to the immediate past department officers. The Auxiliary will hold a past presidents' pres-idents' breakfast at 7 in the El Escalante hotel with Mrs. Paul-lne Paul-lne Hunter In charge. A past department de-partment presidents' luncheon will be held at 1. with a mem-orlal mem-orlal service for departed auxll. iary members at 2. A combined parade of the Le glon and Auxiliary In the after noon, will wind up the activities of the three-day affair.
