Show BAC Opera Promises Rare Treat For Southern Utah Music Lovers From indications thus far, music mu-sic lovers of southern Utah are in store for a treat when they see the Branch Agricultural college col-lege music department's production produc-tion ot the grand opera "La Travlata" Tra-vlata" by. Giuseppe Verdi on April Ap-ril 7. 8, and 9. The cast, orchestra, and chorus chor-us began combined rehearsals last Monday evening. Both Prof. William H. Manning, director of the opera, and Prof. Roy L. Halversen, Hal-versen, director of the orchestra, expressed great satisfation with the first full rehearsal of the entire group. According to Prof. Manning, the rehearsals Monday night went through with few minor corrections. The singers, he said, showed that they had learned their parts well, and the orchestra orches-tra quickly caught the mood of the various scenes and gave splendid support The whole performance per-formance showed that the exacting exact-ing preparations had been well done. Th.? opera Itself is the story of Violetto Vallory, a woman of the world, who gives up her life of pleasure for the love of Alfred Al-fred Germont, a wayward youth. The opera is one of beautiful music and emotional tendernes. Alfred's father pleads with her to give him up so he can take his son home with him to a family fam-ily made sad by the son's mad escapades. Violetto in one of the most beautiful duets written in opera, agrees to make the sacrifice and make the father and family happy. hap-py. Alfred suspects her of perfidy and denounces her before her friends. This with her wrecked love, cause her health which has been impared by dlsipatlon to fail rapidly. The father who finds he has been mistaken, forgives Vloletta and consents to their marriage, but it is too late. After a few moments of happy reunion, Violetto Vio-letto is seized with a spasm which quickly takes her away. She dies in Alfred's arms, and he together with his unhappy father are stricken in deep re-morse re-morse and grief. There are three capable veteran.? vet-eran.? handling the leading parts of the opera. Emma Lou Warren plays Violetto, Wallace Adams takes the part of Alfred Germont, and George Germont, the father, is played by Bernard Quinn. Work on the scenery Is going forward under the care of Rondo Ron-do Manwaring, who handles the role of the Doctor Grenvll, and Robert Cook, who takes the part of Gaston. Mr. Manwaring comes to the college from Blackfoot, Idaho, and Mr. Cook cames from Bake, Oregon. Both are returned missionaries majoring in vocal music. Public performances will be Thursday through Saturday evenings, eve-nings, April 7 to 9 in the college auditorium. A performance for the student body will be given Wednesday, April C. |
