Show Vets Must Apply By August 31 For Leave Pay With less than one week remaining re-maining Utah State Department of Veterans Affairs Director, Ed T. O'Brien, reminds all Utah veterans vet-erans of the August 31, 1948 dadline in which to apply for unused terminal leave pay. Mr. O'Brien pointed out that the last session of Congress amended the act to permit surviving sur-viving brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews of deceased former members of the armed forces to receive the benefit of Armed Forces Leave Bonds. Mr. O'Brien noted, however, that ln those cases where the serviceman died or was killed in action before be-fore being dicharged from the service, widows, next of kin and dependents would not qualify for this benefit, Inasmuch as the six months gratuity pay of the serviceman was made in lieu of this benefit. Widows, next of kin, brothers, sisters and nieces and nephews of the deceased serviceman, who died after discharge from the service and before applying for and receiving his unused terminal term-inal leave pay, may make application, appli-cation, providing it Is done before be-fore August 31, 1948. Mr. O'Brien added that the applications ap-plications for this benefit are being handled by all district service ser-vice offices of the Utah State Department De-partment of Veterans Affairs. It is roughly estimated that nearly three million dollars in benefits will expire on August 31, 1948. He stated that about 20,000 Utah G. I.'s, who have not yet made application, will stand to lose this much out of pocket monev. |
