Show CAUSES OF DISCONTENT. When prosperity is suppoiwvl in wo;;:;. Throughout Through-out the length and breadth of the (aad, tiat there should be so much dissatisfaction amongst the masses of the people is a sad commentary on our civilization. To find the. real cause of so much discontent seems to surpass the knowledge of our-wisest our-wisest statesmen. The settlement of the great coal strike in Pennsylvania last year was a mere compromise, com-promise, affect ing only that region, and perhaps temporary. At any time hostilities may be renewed. re-newed. The chasm that separates capital and labor la-bor is becoming every year broader. Between both there is nothing in common. Labor unions and trusts are marshaled against each other, like two powerful armies preparing for battle array. It cannot be denied that excessive greed and avarice are the underlying causes of all the troubles that exist. The worship of Mammon has been substituted substi-tuted for the worship of God. The rising generations genera-tions have been taught to look upon this life as the only one worth living for, and their aim and end when entering the battle of life is the promotion promo-tion of their earthly interests and enjoyments. The burdens of marriage arc to a great extent discarded, dis-carded, and those who hold it to be indissoluble are the exception. Belief in God, who rewards virtue vir-tue and punishes the impenitent, and the" hope of blissful immortality, are treated as superstitions. To these and many other evils which are prevalent are duo in a great measure the present disordered state of society. Liberty, equality and , enlightenment arc the great boast of the age. Liberty, with the anarchists, an-archists, means lawlessness, plunder and murder. Equality means division of property, and its cham-pions'nevcr cham-pions'nevcr fail to show their deep interest in the masses of h3 people, and their great desire to ameliorate the sad state of the laborer, who, they claim, is not only oppressed, but defrauded by the capitalist. Enlightenment, sure enough, we see in the numberless inventions that are made annually. ' All the elements are at man's command. The winds ; and electric sparks are under his control, and through their agency he annihilates space. But, with all this, people are less happy and contented than they were in the past. Why? Because they have been lacking faith in God and justice. The troubles that exist at present in different parts of the country are mainly due to the arbitrary and imprudent harangues of those who constitute themselves, them-selves, or arc constituted, to defend the cause of labor. Without laboring themselves, they would convert mines and factories into an Eldorado land where they could not only dictate to their employers, employ-ers, but to the State, what they should receive, as well as what they should do. In this the masses are deceived, but the State, for its own protection, will do by the bayonet what should be accomplished by love of justice and truth. . i. |
