Mock Court Gives Kids Feel for Real Thine "Judge" Tyler Barney threw the book at "convicted car thief" Curt Crofts in a mock court held at the Garfield County Courthouse in Panguitch. Dawna Barney, court clerk held a mock trail to acquaint young people with courtroom procedures. Sandra Holman and Marilyn Bulkley brought their first and second graders to the county courthouse in Panguitch where Clerk Barney chose 27 students to fill the offices of the court, including the jury, the accused and his defense attorney, , four witnesses for the accused, the prosecutor with the complaining or arresting officer and two witnesses for the prosectuion. The'feailiff, whose primary function fun-ction is the protection of the jduge, the court clerk and the recorder filled out the cast. Barney set up a hypothetical case in which Crofts was accused of stealing a car in front of the Welcome Mart. He was then charged with driving the car west on Center Street to First West then turning south where he was accused of wrecking the car by hitting a light pole, leaving the scene of accident and then going east to the Round-up where he was seen drunk. At Crofts mock trial, "Bailiff" Ben Matthews brought the defendant defen-dant into the court room where he was seated next to his "defense attorney," Marvin Lane. His four witnesses were Summer Allen, Heidi Christy, Connie Nielson and Ginger Hatch. Josh Handley acted as "prosecutor" in the case, with Rebecca Nolan as "complaining or arresting officer" and Tara Excell and Angela Torgerson being the "witnesses" for the prosecution. Char Sanders was "court clerk" and Erin Houston was "court recorder" with the "jury" composed com-posed of Chad Baldwin, Jared Parry, Jared Dunn, Brandy Owens, Veronica Yazzie, Shaniel Barnhurst, and Katerina Bagnell. Other jurers were Anne Holman, Susan Barnhurst, Bar-nhurst, Kimberly Soper, Lee Ann Gardner, Amanda Talbot, Rebekah . Peterson and Teresa Bills. After hearing both the prosecution and the defense, the case was thrown into the hands of the jury. The jury found for the prosecution and Crofts was found guilty of stealing a vehicle. The charge of leaving the scene of an accident and of public intoxication was dropped and the jury "sentenced him" to 1 to 15 years. |
