A point system helps l determine which of the winners will then go on to the National finals. Competition is tough. State champions in each event win a prestigious "Circle Y" trophy saddle valued near $1,000. Four of these saddles came home to Garfield j County this year! Emilce Lott of Escalante won the title of Miss Utah High School Rodeo Queen, Matt Liston, also of Escalante and Brian Roundy of I Boulder walked off witfi the team-roping team-roping championship under their belt and Teddy Hurst of Henrieville won the saddlc-bronc riding event. Liston, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Liston and husband of Lynette Liston; and Brian, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kelly Roundy of Boulder, won first place in the first and second go-arounds of state competition with times of 9.40 and 9.53 seconds respectively. A bit of j hard luck placed them 5th in the final fi-nal go-around and second in the average, av-erage, racking up enough points to give them the No. 1 spot, in an event that boasted 51 teams! Both Liston and Roundy made it to the finals last year placing in the r top 20 in the nation, but Liston's horse became ill with distemper and ! : almost died and Teddy Hurst was i thrown. Hclaman Noyes from the Henry Mountains placed third in saddle bronc riding and will also go to the national finals. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Garth Noyes and has to travel an added distance from the remote Noyes ranch to each of the events. Howard Simpson, a Panguitch High School freshman, represented our area well with a most difficult bull-riding effort which netted him plaques and many calluses. All four Garfield County State Champs will travel to Pueblo, Colorado, to compete in the National High School Rodeo Finals to be held the week of July 23-31. Said one of their mothers, "I don't know how young people compete under such pressure, but we truly have some champions." Everyone in Garfield County will have their eyes on the finals and look forward to great results. |
