This 1985 Audi brought its owner, Lew Bracker, Los Angeles, within a half-mile of his destination, the Pink Cliffs Bryce ! Village, before the car burst into flames. Traffic was blocked 1 for an hour on Utah Highway 12 a half mile east of Highway 63. The car and its contents were completely ruined. Cause of the fire is under investigation. Non-Farm Jobs Increase In Garfield County Garfield County enjoyed a healthy increase in nonfarm jobs and exhibited one of the best first quarter records the county has ever had for construction according to economists writing for the Utah Department of Employment Security. In the UDES Labor Market Information In-formation Report for the first quarter quar-ter of 1988, economists Brad Mc-Garry Mc-Garry and Mike Sylvester reported that the 50 new nonfarm jobs over the first quarter in 1987 was the result re-sult of increases in manufacturing and service jobs. The growth in manufacturing jobs was led by lumber and wood products and in services, lodging employment was the major push behind the 30 new jobs. Four new homes, two in Panguitch Pan-guitch and two in the unincorporated unincorporat-ed area of the county added $208,000 to total construction valuation with the construction of a $1.1 million school building the biggest contributor to the statistics. As a result, total construction valuation was $1.4 million versus $39,000 in first quarter 1987. Specifically, in Panguitch during the first quarter, a service station and restaurant opened their doors for business, the S.U.E. Market closed after 117 years of service to the community, the Bryce Way Restaurant closed but has since reopened under new management as ' Bishops Coffee Shop, and work begun on a new motel in Tropic has been temporarily halted. Statistically, dramatic changes were indicated in the report for Garfield County for Job Service activities ac-tivities for 1988 over 1987. In 1988 there were 112 new applications applica-tions (65 in 1987) for a 73.3 pecent increase; 164 job openings (57 in 1987) for a 187.7 percent increase; and 140 job placements (54 in 1987) for a 159.3 percent increase for the first quarter. For the entire Southwestern District (Beaver, Garfield, Iron, Kane and Washington Counties), the jobless rate dropped from 7.5 in first quarter 1987 to 6.7 percent in first quarter 1988. Nonfarm jobs increased by 530 over first quarter 1987, with service and manufacturing manufactur-ing creating most of the jobs. Overall for the area, building construction con-struction valuation dipped to $14.3 million in first quarter 1988 from $15.9 million first quarter 1987. Tourist room payments increased to 13.9 percent to stand at $6.3 million. mil-lion. Initial filings for unemploy- ment compensation fell to 19.4 percent The district's first quarter 1988 nonfarm job growth was led by a 10 percent growth in service jobs. The 450 new service jobs, the report re-port indicated, came on the strength of increased lodging, recreation and health service jobs. The increase in service jobs helped to produce the 530 new nonfarm jobs in the district dis-trict over first quarter 1987. Manufacturing also contributed a significant number of new jobs with 170. Most of the industry's increase was in food products and fabricated metals products manufacturing. |
