Show Cowboy Poets Sought Under New Project For more than 100 years, cowboys and other westerners have written songs and poems about cowboy and ranch life. In recognition of this traditional art form, the Folk Arts Program ot the Utah Arts Council has joined with a number of state arts agencies in the region and the Institute of the American West in Sun Valley, Idaho on a project designed to document and highlight both contemporary and historical cowboy poets and their poetry. The project, which will include the production of cassette recordings, exhibits, a published anthology of poetry and perhaps a television show, will culminate in regionwide gathering of poets in Elko, Nevada next January. Utah's Folk Arts program is currently looking for cowboy poets and poetry from the Beehive State. Cowboys, rodeo hands, ranchers or other cow people who recite poems about their western lifestyle as well as any poetry that might have been published locally in newspapers, books or pamphlet form are all of great interest. Any information about Utah's cowboy poets, whether they are still creating and sharing their art today or have left a legacy in published form or in the minds of their friends and family should be sent to Carol Edison, Folk Arts Program, Utah Arts Council, 617 E. South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah 84102. Information is available by calling 533-5760. |
