Show Garfield Golfers Play In Cancer Tournament The American Cancer Society was the big winner in Monday's third annual Garfield Cancer GoU tourney as nearly $250 was raised for this great cause. Together with the terrific support of the Thunderbird Golf Course in Mt. Carmel, about 20 Garfield golfers had a geat time and helped benefit others. The Thunderbird donated the greens fees and each player donated an entry fee. Pepsi Cola also made a generous donation. In this very popular affair at Mt. Carmel, the team of Brian Foy and Jim Yardley won first at six under par, followed by the team of John Seaman and Gary Tom at five under and the team of Marten McWilliams, Spike Brown and George Brown at a minus three. The team of " J's", O.J. Bauer and J.J. Cook won a special prize for a free round of golf. Tom Butterfield won the closest to the pin competition. The local golf group will resume regular summer play on July 16th at 1 p.m. at the Thun-, derbird. It is always a "scramble" golf competition and anyone is welcome. In other county sports action, the summer baseball and softball leagues are in full swing. In Panguitch Little League, the Wally Veater coached Pioneers lead the league. In girls little league softball, the Super Slugs are in first place. Women's slo-pitch is still trying to get untracked. Please contact Tammy Barton to play on Wednesdays at 6 p.m. Ages 16 and over can play. In Women's fast-pitch sponsored by S&C Merc, the girls have won a couple and lost a couple. In the Panguitch City Slo-Pitch league, Zions Bank heads the list in chasing the first half title followed by Precision Bilt just one game back and a head to head battle looming this week between the two. Men's games are now starting at 7:30 and 8:45 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Nationally, Bruce Hurst is having a little arm trouble at the presnt time, but sports a glossy 8-5 record as the top pitcher for the Bostom Red Sox. Larry Bird of the World Champion Boston Celtics was honored as the league MVP Monday night in Salt Lake City. Frank Layden was honored as both coach and executive of the year. It was a dream season for the Utah Jazz to be sure. The likable and ever glib Layden was at his best in the televised program on Channel 5. Hope many of you got to see that one. Look for a great deal of activity this month as final preparations for the Olympics begins. Several Utahns qualified and we will keep you informed. Finally, the Panguitch City Swimming Pool has some terrific games and plans on tap for the summer. Watch next week's Garfield County News so you can be included in the fun, for both young and old alike. |
