Show I Makes Cents It BY VI JUDGE Dear Vi: Utter boxes for cats are so messy, I I decided to do something about it. I brought two matching solid plastic laundry tubs with rims. With a heated knife, I carved out a hole large enough for a cat to enter at the top of one tub, then I fastened the two together, top to top, with shower hooks through holes drilled with a heated ice pick. The cat litter goes in the bottom tub, the one without the hole; the top one keeps it from getting scattered around. This works so well I wish I had done this year ago. Have you tried an ordinary pencil eraser for black marks on the heels of shoes. Marcie Abbott I Tampa, Florida Dear Vi: ' If you make your own yogurt, try adding a little cornstarch to the milk. You'll get nice smooth yogurt that doesn't separate. We also add cornstarch when we make yogurt ice cream. Here's another idea I've found helpful. I roll out cookies, pie crust, etc. on my formica counter top, but first, I cool it by placing some packages of frozen food on it for a few minutes. It's surprising how helpful this is, especially with pie crust. I like to have pies on hand for company, so I mix up a large batch of pastry dough to roll out and freeze flat between sheets of waxed paper. To use, position the dough over the pie tin. When it warms ip enough to relax, you can quickly shape it and add the filling. The upper crust will fasten nicely to the bottom crust if you warm it in the oven briefly, then press the two together, crimping the edges as desired. Edith Nottingham, Provo, Utah Dear Vi: I've recently discovered that when you need to separate and wilt cabbage leaves for cabbage rolls, it's much easier if you boil the entire head of cabbage then remove the leaves. Hilma Huntington Rexburg, Idaho 1 tried that,, Hilma and your ccrtaintly right. Have you noticed that men have a knack of getting a job done quickly and easily? Like a bachelor I know who hates to cook so he boils seven eggs on Sunday, one for each day of the week. Then, right in the water he heats for instant coffee, he warms an egg. This, toast, and orargajuice gives him a quick, no messT, instant breakfast. Did you realize that you can broil steaks right from the freezer. They get nice and brown on the outside and remain juicy and tender inside. I had to learn this from a man, also. |
