| Show B CANYON an appreciation by norman V pearce chautauqua lecturer I 1 have been overwhelmed by the majestic grandeur the im immensity of the great canadian I 1 have feasted as it were on the dazzling beauty of niagara in winter with its surrounding parks covered with a velvet like blanket of snow the i mighty sunlit glaciers of alaska glistening a pale blue green and white have charmed me beyond the power of language to express I 1 have spent many hours roaming among the crumbling battlements and ports of old quebec which are rich in incidents of the past I 1 have lain upon the white sands of waikiki beach in the glorious hawaiian islands and been lulled into the realms of beautiful dreams by the natives singing in perfect harmony their plaintive melodies to the accompaniment of tuneful native instruments the moments of extreme pleasure andoe and of educational surprises I 1 have met in my extensive travels travels arn too numerous to tell of in detail but they we were fc all dwarfed into insignificance today when I 1 gazed gassed for the first time upon the greatest wonder beauty of the ages I 1 bryce canyon in southern utah ii glancing through the remarks column ol ok the hotel register here I 1 noticed beside two bracketed names how are wie we going to tell them I 1 feel sure that everyone who has his or r her name in that tha book has felt like writing that sentence fr for that is what each must have thought on first beholding this bewildering magnificence for one who has not visited it in order to get edeh even the faintest idea of what it is it would be necessary for such a one to think of every colour bolour and shade one has ever known then to let the imagination agi nation loose and picture tens of thousands of designed spires and binn pinnacles binnacles acles tinted as though by fairy hands with all these colours colouos and shades faultlessly matched then to picture the sunlight adding and life to these colours colouos col ours then lastly to imagine oneself standing upon tho the edge of a great precipice gazing down upon this masterpiece of the creators handiwork but how are we chig going to tell you I 1 have never been so overwhelmed overwhelm edin in my life 1 I came C me to this canyon in a car with two compan companions igns a L married couple upon turning our leads heads and gazing upon the full splendour of orthis this never to be forgotten scene ocene a flood odears of tears came to my eyes the lady lade of the party screamed in amazement J whilst th the other 9 gentleman just said 41 my godl god I 1 Is U real eal and beckma silent if had seen twenty teny rainbows foi bOws in the s alcy y at once it woul not have amazed me m more I 1 alieve that if his effra ext ti ordinary ardinary nary 6 scene pene 1 was sufficiency ay known there wo woula lobe be such a of sight seers as a 4 the world acl lias is never known |
