Many mechanical improvements were subsequently made, both in England and in the United States. In 1831 the swiveling locomotive truck carrying a set of supporting wheels supplanted the fixed truck; in 1836 the outside coupling of pairs of driving wheels was introduced, and in 1837 were applied to counterbalances driving wheels and other parts to Andy sends the 'Stoi Vlh Question und Answer Book ADout Spuce" to K evin Muye , 13, Morion, Ohio, tor his question. WHEN WAS THE F1KST LOCO- MOTIVE BUILT? A locomotive is any type oi vehicle used by railroads to pull or push other types of rolling stock, including passenger, freight and work cars. The first practical locomotive was constructed in 1804 in England by a British engineer and inventor named Richard Trevithick. Trevithick's locomotive, with four driving wheels, had smooth wheels operating on smooth metal rails. Its success proved that sufficient traction could be obtained without the use of gear wheels and a cogged or toothed track. Equally important, the Trevithick locomotive exhausted its steam into the smokestack or flue of the engine's firebox. This method of exhaust provided a forced draft for the fire in the firebox and was employed on all subsequent steam locomotives. After the successful trials of the Trevithick locomotive, a number of moderately successful locomotives were built in England, primarily for use in mining operations. Not until 1829 was a locomotive developed for use in a regular commercial railway carrying both passengers and freight. In that year a British engineer named George Stephenson entered his locomotive, called The Rocket, in a competition with other locomotives for a prize of 500 pounds offered by the Liverpool and Manchester Railroad. Stephensons locomotive best fulfilled all the conditions set by the railroad for practical operation. The Rocket pulled a load of three times its own weight at a rate of 12.5 miles per hour and hauled a passenger coach filled with passengers at 24 miles per hour. This performance stimulated the building of other loco d By Saunders and Ernst Mary Worth Bv Leonard Starr Annie smooth the operation of the engine The American type, equipped with four driving wheels and a leading truck, was excellent for ordinary service but was not adapted to pulling long and heavy freight trains over severe grades. Until about 1940, steam engines provided the driving power of most locomotives used on U S. railroads. four-whe- Awards oo to elrls ond boys between the ayes ot 7 and 17 when their questions are answered In the Ask Andy column. Correct technique is to win the ace of diamonds and immediately ruff a diamond in hand. Next, declarer cashes the king and ace of trumps. If both defenders follow, declarer can get back to hand to draw the last trump and claim his contract.
