If youve ever tried to get your teen-age- r to give you some input" as to why a certain movie is awesome or why some BYU-eoe- d jokes are grody, you know that our language is lacking a certain definiteness and color The problem is not a new one. Those of us who grew up in the 60s, recall the definitive" expressions of that time such as groovy, out of sight" and "far out." Knack for Saying The people of years gone by had a knack for saying things. They seldom, if ever, minced words, combining common sense with wit to get their point across with a smile. The following are some examples say things now and how we said them then: An older woman in todays society might apologetically explain the lack of basic black m her wardrobe by saying, "Black isnt my color. In the past, she might have simply said, "I never wear black. People might think I was too mean to change between funerals. Today, a man who is known as tight" might have been described in the 1920s as a man who squeezed a nickel so hard he made the Indian ride the buffalo. Much has been said in the media recently about the causes and effects of stress, but it has been known for years that "If you dont want to be as d cat in a room nervous as a full of rocking chairs you should "Charge it to the dust and let the rain settle it. of how we one-taile- Nowadays, when we come across an individual we really dont care for. we explain We don't relate," instead of candidly saying sympathy to a friend who seemed down in the dumps "You look like you sold the butter and lost the mon- youngster, I couldn't figure out why anyone wanted flies) or "The" more you stir it, the more it stinks ey Another explanation is that our advanced communication and transportation have caused us to lose the individuality that was once present in different regions and ways of life. The lack of originality in our speech may be the result of a lack of variety in our ways of living Instead of coining our own sayings, we use the terminology of our peers. Whatever the reason, it is a shame that "People just dont talk the way they used to. Sandra Dawn Brimhall, I'tah native, is a mass communications graduate of the University of I'tah. It wasnt necessarily so of expression was ways." Euphemisms Everywhere One of the reasons our ways of expression have changed may be due to the fact that unlike the baseball umpire, we are unwilling or afraid to "call them like we see them." Euphemisms are everywhere. Or, perhaps, often wisely, we have taken to heart the old sayings such as "You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar" (although as a fi" Ms. Brimhall in the old days. Many a bore was mercifully silenced with a droll "I kicked the slats out of my cradle the first time I heard that joke." I have found that trimming my own hair is not all that difficult but it takes prac- first few times but just keep at it and you will begin to understand the texture of your hair and the way it grows. Soon, it will become easier to do and, unless you need a real precision haircut, will look good. Every so often you can go to a hair- - tice as well as experimenting. A "review mirror" is a must, as well as professional haircutting scissors. You can look at a good book on home haircutting at your local library. First of all, wet your hair Betrothal shampoo, just water). Then apply a conditioner that comes from a tube (heavy consistency). This helps to keep the hair glued together when you part it off and check it for length to even the cut. Work one small section at a time and check frequently to be certain the right side is even with the left. Do not cut it as short as you think it should be. Depending upon the texture of your hair, it can shrink as much as inch when dry. So be sure to learn to understand this shrinkage by allowing for it. It is better if you can keep your hair looking maintained rather than just cut. When the cut is finished, then sham- Macaw breeder sets appearance California pet owner to breeder Candy Mills is the guest speaker Jan. 25 for the Avicultural Society of Utahs meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the e Zoo Elephant Hall.
