There's been a lot of speculation among Cougar fans about the 1984 edition of the Cats. The unknown quantities in the skill positions on offense plus the tough schedule the Cougars face make it tough to predict just what kind of record BYU will have as November winds down. If it's comfort, the tional 30, 1884 Is th w Cougars are in the No. 20 spot. Meanwhile, the Cougars' first opponent, Pittsburgh, will be ranked as high as 3rd in some while others rank them as low as 19th. At least one ranks the Cougars higher than the Panthers. Here's a quick look at the jumn bled 1984 national and the magazines what rankings are saying about the Cougars: Rankings: Throw the names of the top 30 or so teams in the nation in a hat and pull one out and you'll probably have as much chance of correctly predicting the national champion as any of the magazines. Football Roundup has a top five, consisting of Auburn, Clem-soOhio State, Arizona State and Florida. Behind those two come Iowa, Clemson and Penn State. The Cougars rate their highest nod in this magazine, chosen to finish 12th, while Pittburgh is looking up at BYU from its No. 16 ranking. Sporting News College Football Yearbook disagrees with the rest and chooses Texas as the national champ, followed by Clemson, Pittsburgh, UCLA and Alabama. BYU is mentioned in the 19th spot. Athlon's Western Football moves east long enough to pick Auburn as it's No. 1 team, followed by Texas, Pittsburgh, Oklahoma and Clemson. The Cougars aren't mentioned. If that's not confusing enough, note that Auburn, ranked No. 1 by some, isn't even mentioned in the Sporting News poll and is only 12th in the Sport magazine poll. ASU and Notre Dame, No. 1 in other polls, are a measly 12th and 13 on the Sporting News list and neither is mentioned anywhere in the Athlon list. So much for national rankings. How about the WAC ratings? Everyone knows the WAC writers have (again) put the Cougars in the favorites role in the conference race. And so, for the most part, have the magazines. Sports Illustrated casts a dissenting voice, opting Dixon to predict that BYU will win the WAC title again. The Cougars may have to unveil Includes: G.W.
